Born on July 22, 1948 in Tulsa, Oklahoma- the setting for many of her novels- S.E. Hinton is the best known writer of young adult fiction: she was only 16 when she wrote her first novel, The Outsiders, which was published in 1967 with Viking Books while she was a freshman in college. Ms. Hinton has the distinction of having some of her books both taught in schools and banned in others!
She was influenced to write her novels because she "wasn't satisfied with the literature that was being written for young adults." She was became known as "The Voice of the Youth", and went on to publish 4 more young adult novels, two children's books, and recently an adult thriller.

4 of Ms. Hinton's young adult novels have been made into movies starring Matt Dillon, Emilio Estevez, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Tom Cruise, Mickey Rourke, Nicolas Cage, and Morgan Freeman. Francis Ford Coppola even directed two of them!
Ms. Hinton loves horse-back riding; her own horse was the inspiration for the horse in Tex.
Ms. Hinton has won many awards for her novels including the 1971, 1975, and 1979 ALA Best Books for Young Adults.
