Rock-lover Brian James (who looks like he could be a rocker himself) grew up in New Jersey outside of Philidelphia. Born January 7th, 1976, the proud Capricorn had always dreamed of being published. In 1994, when he was 18, he moved to New York City's East Village to attend NYU. He graduated in 1998 with a Bachelor's degree in English Literature. Even though within the next few years he would be a well-published author, Brian had never taken any creative writing classes, despite his dream of being published. In fact, beyond a few close friends, he hardly even shared his writing with anyone even though he wrote all the time. He had sent stories to journals and magazines but always found rejection. |

Brian gave up on writing for a while and started working with PUSH in 1999, a publishing company that was preparing to get off the ground within the next few years. He read manuscripts for them, but all the manuscripts he read were "pretty bad" and he let his bosses know how he felt. The people at PUSH asked Brian to try writing something of his own.Over that weekend, he wrote the first 30 pages of the story that would become his first published novel. Pure Sunshine is the story of two days in the life of teenage Brendan as he trips on LSD with his friends and fears talking to a girl he wants to connect with. PUSH loved it and Pure Sunshine was the first book the company ever signed! Brian was 23-years-old, and in 2001, Pure Sunshine debuted to great reviews, including favorable compairissons to Stephen Chbosky's now-classic The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Melvin Burgess's Smack. Over the next few years, Brian would continue to write gritty YA; 2003 brought Tomorrow, Maybe, the story of a 15-year-old runaway girl living in NYC who takes an 11-year-old fellow runaway under her wing; Perfect World, the story of a young woman coping with her father's suicide and trying to reconnect emotionally with the world, was published in 2005; and Dirty Liar, the companion to Perfect World, premiered in February 2006 and is the story of a misunderstood young man who has escaped the abuse of his mother's boyfriend by moving across the country to live with his father and stepmother, and how through the women in his life he learns to cope. Brian, now 30, recently moved with his wife upstate to Phoenicia, where Brian is now hard at work on a series about Catkid, half-cat and half-girl! |

Some of Brian's favorite music is from John Frusciante, Guns N Roses, and Nirvana. In 2002, Brian attended the Philidelphia Guns N Roses concert. Unfortunately Axel Rose never showed and a riot broke out! Luckily, Brian got out okay! Brian is "eagerly awaiting the day when rock stars take over the world." Did you know?: Brian wrote the first draft of Tomorrow, Maybe in just three weeks! |
