Beavers and Lady Beavers split week Staff Beaver Dam GLEN ROSE - A big week for basketball at Glen Rose this week, as the Beavers and Lady Beavers are winding down the 5AA South Conference season. The week started with homecoming on Tuesday, with the Panthers from Magnet Cove paying a visit to Beaver Gymnasium, and then on Thursday night, the Beavers hit the road to take on Mountain Pine. Tuesday at Glen Rose was indeed Homecoming. Megan Bailey was the queen, Brynn Murphree was the princess, and Jessica McDougal was the senior maid. The later of the two are basketball players, and the Lady Beavers put on a pretty good show on Tuesday night. The Lady Beavers have had a injury-laden year. Three guards on the team have succumbed to knee injuries, and yet another guard missed the first half of the season. Things have been going a little better for the Lady Beavers as of late, and Tuesday night was no exception. Magnet Cove boasts the best girls team in the conference. Glen Rose, with all of the injuries, and all of the set backs this season, came out determined on Tuesday night, after one half of play they found themselves down by only 8. The third quarter proved to be the determining factor as Magnet Cove put it away pulling out to a 42-18 lead. But, the Lady Beavers had a strong fourth quarter and made the game more respectable. Magnet Cove held on though, and took the 48-35 win. Jessica McDougal was the leading scorer for the Lady Beavers with 14, Brynn Murphree had 10, Mae Meredith had 6. In the senior boys game, Magnet Cove pulled away to an early lead up by 11 at the half. It was familiar territory for the Beavers as just a week earlier they found themselves down by 11 against Jessieville at home, and came back to win. The Beavers would not have the same amount of luck on this Tuesday night, as they pulled back into the game only down 33-28 after three. In the fourth quarter the Beavers actually tied the game, but a few missed opportunities Magnet Cove pulled away and spoiled homecoming to the tune of 47-38. Heath Clardy set the pace for the Beavers with 18, Josh Scott had 8, Spencer Burroughs poured in 6, Neil Smart had 4, and Richard Holder had 2. In the first game of the night, the Jr. Beavers lost as well, 38-27. Wes Copeland led Glen Rose with 14 in the loss. On Thursday night, the Beavers would turn things around. In an exciting Sr. Boys game, it looked like Mountain Pine would defeat the Beavers for the second time this year. Glen Rose again, found themselves down at the half, and still down after three quarters of play. Mountain Pine's 43-36 lead after three quarters would vanish in the fourth quarter, as the Beavers stepped it up on defense, and started hitting on offense. Neil Smart and Josh Scott got the Beavers back in to the game offensivley. With just seconds left on the clock the Beavers were down by one 56-55. Glen Rose had possession, and gave the ball to their leading scorer, Scott. Mountain Pine, unwisely bailed the Beavers out, when they fouled Scott, who is also the best free throw shooter at Glen Rose. He knocked down the first free throw, and Mountain Pine called time out. After the time out, Scott knocked down the second at put Glen Rose up 57-56 with 5 seconds left. Mountain Pine had one more chance, and got a pretty good look, but they weren't able to convert, and the score remained the same. The Lady Beavers got their 3rd win of the season at the hands of Mountain Pine. It was the first conference win of the year for the Lady Beavers, who are finally gaining some ground after having a tough season. The Lady Beavers won 32-28. Moutain Pine and Glen Rose are now tied at the bottom of the 5AA South. Jenna Henslee led the lady Beavers with 13, and Jackie Jones had 11. Holly Green led the Jr. High Lady Beavers to a 30-18 win. Green had 10 points, as the Jr. High Lady Beavers continue to roll. |
