hollywood declares war on north korea
It’s official, following George Bush’s lead, Hollywood
has declared war on North Korea! Portrayed as the
convenient archvillian nation, the new James Bond
movie, Die Another Day, features a rogue North Korean
colonel, who after undergoing gene therapy in a secret
Cuban clinic so that he can pass as a European
playboy, proceeds to try and forcibly reunify the
Korean peninsula. The plot, which is perhaps one of
the most ridiculous shown on a movie screen this year,
revolves around a massive mirrored-laser satellite
that the sports car owning North Korean colonel is
going to use to clear a path through the mine field
that lies in the De-Militarized Zone between North and
South Korea.
Bond, after being captured and tortured by the North
Koreans, is forced to go rogue himself to get revenge
(though of course he is welcomed back by both American
and British intelligence by the end of the film).
After blowing up the Cuban DNA clinic, and rescuing
Halle Barry from a melting palace of ice in Iceland,
fortunately Bond succeeds in stopping the evil North
Korean colonel and his sidekicks, just as they seize
power and are about to invade South Korea.
Bond movies are not exactly known for their
sophisticated plots or stimulating discourse, but this
one takes the cake. The most alarming thing about the
whole production though is how it fits sickenly hand
in glove with the Bush administration’s new war
threats against North Korea. The movie not only
perpetuates Bush’s claim that North Korea is a
dark-evil-grumpy-hermetic rogue nation likely to lash
out at the world at any moment, but it throws in an
argument for that Star Wars missile defense system
that Bush is salivating over (how else can we defend
ourselves from those giant North Korean laser gun
satellites?).
In summary, this movie should not only be avoided by
anyone looking to watch something with a plot, but it
should be picketed for having perhaps some of the
worst war mongering politics to come out of a
notoriously war mongering film industry!
