iraq resolution
Once again the United States is threatening war against Iraq. From the beginning, the policy of the U.S. towards Iraq has been that of violently ensuring that its national interests be met, regardless of the consequences. In other words its policy has been that of imperialism.
More than 600,000 children have died in Iraq due to the UN embargo and US bombing raids. According to UNICEF 960,000 Iraqi children under 5 years of age, which amounts to 32% of that age group, are now chronically malnourished.
Iraq also reports that cancer, birth defects and fatal diseases have increased 10 times since the Gulf War, and this is suspected to be largely the result of the United States’ use of munitions containing depleted uranium, which now contaminates Iraq’s water and food chain. This has all been compounded by the fact that due to the UN embargo Iraqi clinics and hospitals are operating without anesthesia, bandages or antibiotics.
This policy of aggression and virtual genocide looks to be soon furthered by another attack on Iraq over the dispute concerning UN inspectors. What this amounts to though is a flagrant violation of Iraq’s right to national sovereignty and self-determination. The United States has no right to interfere in the internal affairs of other countries!
As students and young people, and as honest and concerned citizens, we need to reach out our hands in solidarity to the Iraqi people. We need to also oppose the use of our peers as cannon fodder in Washington’s war drive against Iraq. The greatest threat to peace and the peoples of the world right now is not Iraq, but the US rulers desire to act as police of the world. In order to stop this all humane and peace loving people need to speak out and to mobilize now to make the price of killing too politically expensive for the rulers to pay.
U.S. Hands Off Iraq!
End the Sanctions!
The above resolution was passed by the Northland College Student Association in February of 1998. It was faxed by that body to the then president of the United States, Bill Clinton. It has recently come to our attention that there is no record of this resolution being passed in NCSA’s minutes. We are therefore posting this resolution on our website to preserve it.
