report on midwest anti-war conference

Dear brothers and sisters,

A regional conference of student anti-war groups was held this weekend in Chicago. There were an estimated 200 students in attendance and over 27 campuses from eight states were represented. Four members of Duluth-Superior SAW attended (Steffanie, Adam, Rose and myself) as well as six from the Ashland group (Carl, Annie, Fiona, Mark, Kyle and Christine).

On Saturday, many informative workshops on issues relating to the current conflict were held.

On Sunday, we voted on a number of different propositions and here is what was decided:

A network of Midwestern campus anti-war groups was formed under the name of the Midwest Campus Anti-war Network (MCAN) with three points of unity:

1. Stop the war.

2. Stop racist attacks on Arabs, Muslims and all other groups.

3. Defend civil liberties.

It was decided to form a coordinating committee consisting of eight representatives, one from each state that participated (except for two from Illinois until Missouri can decide on a representative). I was chosen to be the representative for Minnesota. For those of you from Wisconsin, your representative is Sarah Bodine and her e-mail address is Sbodi511@uwsp.edu.

It was resolved to have action to protect students' privacy. Campus groups will be pressuring student government and school adminstrations to put in writing an agreement not to release student records to the FBI or any other governmental investigative agencies. This was decided in light of the fact that the INS may try to deport student activists from abroad even if they have legal visas and to protect all student activists from police harassment.

It was also resolved to defend faculty who support this movement as they may come under much harassment and intimidation as well.

It was resolved to have a day of united action on the 10th of December and to have a united day of teach-ins on the 23rd of January.

MCAN approved of having a national conference in either February or March.

Any comments or suggestions from Minnesota students on where we want MCAN to go are very welcome!

Your brother,
Matkeane
