It was still the middle of the day and a few people were left on the streets. Not everyone, it seemed had turned themselves into the Army. For the most part, however, the city was ghastly and deserted. It was like they were walking through a dry and dusty ghost town, occasionally stepping off from the road to hide from the military patrols. The delay at the Radio Shack had set them back considerably, there was no way they could get out of the city before nightfall, and they began to feel hungry. Finally, around 7:00 Jaina convinced Davis to find some food. He picked a random house and knocked on the door. There was no answer and the door was locked so he used the butt of his shotgun to knock the door in. As he expected the home had been deserted. He made his way to the kitchen while Jaina looked for the bathroom. In the ‘fridge he found plenty of nourishment. Loading his arms with bread, bologna and mayonnaise he began to turn around when he was struck violently in the side of the head. Stars danced in front of his eyes and his ear felt hot with blood. His shotgun clattered across the kitchen floor. There, standing with him was one of the infected – another zombie. Again the zombie struck Davis with amazing force, this time in his side. These creatures, which had been so slow, proved to have unexpected and formidable strength. Davis cried out in pain and backed to the kitchen counter as the zombie again smashed his fist into Davis’ head. The zombie had cornered him and opened its mouth into a deathlike grin – he watched in terror as it prepared to sink its rotten teeth into him. Panicked, Davis scrambled back along the counter – his hand strayed along the wall, he felt something…a knife! Raising his arm, Davis plunged the knife into the zombie – it staggered back. Pulling it free, he stabbed the zombie again and again until it collapsed onto the floor. Grabbing his shotgun he went to find Jaina. “Jaina!” he shouted, “they’re in the house! Where are you?” Before he heard the reply he stumbled in to the hallway to behold another zombie trying to break down what must have been the bathroom door. Without hesitation, Davis fired his weapon into the zombie’s torso. It staggered back, but remained upright. Again he fired, and it collapsed. “Jaina,” he called through the door, “you can come out now. We have to leave right away.” She came out visibly terrified and headed for the exit. They realized now that they were in constant danger. To be safe Davis gave Jaina the kitchen knife, he didn’t doubt they would need it again. |
