Ryuichi's music began when he was fourteen, singing on the school stage. He is hydrophobic yet he challenges this fear by surfing and so his love for the sea emerges and his phobia disappears.

Ryuichi, the band member which has undergone the most significant changes during the career of the band. He was the last member to join Lunacy (before they were called Luna Sea). After a school concert where Lunacy met Slaughter, both bands impressed each other's performance and Lunacy invited the vocalist Rayla (as Ryuichi was known then) to join the band.

In earlier performances of Luna Sea, Ryuichi had a very dark image. Times were hard and he sang in an anguished and harsh tone. From Luna Sea to Style, there is a distinguishable change in use of voice and tone. There is a gradual softening in his voice and the flow of words become smoother. Ryuichi is the lyricist of the band, writing most of the band's lyrics. The style the lyrics are written are similar but the words have eventually become more optimistic and gentler. In the later years of the band's career, Ryuichi has been known as the playboy, he claims that he can't write good lyrics if he's not in love.

Ryuichi sings in tune in live performances and in an emotional way that enchants many of his female slaves (fans). His ability to use his voice is amazing, from the dark and painful visual rock years to his soft romantic solo work, he conveys the texture and emotions of the songs in a fasinating way. The famous Luna Sea song I For You touches every fans' heart in live performances as he sings with sadness and often ends the song in floods of tears.

On stage, Ryuichi is a very active person, running and singing around the stage but the slaves' favourite Ryuichi act is when he harasses Sugizo, although Sugizo has warned Ryuichi many times not to distract him when playing his guitar solos.

Sometimes Ryuichi is recognised as the band's leader, this might be due to the massive success in his solo work but Luna Sea say no one member is the leader.
