Takumi Fujiwara is the main character of Initial D. The story practically evolves around him. Since he is the main character, the viewer sees more of a character development in Takumi more than any other character in the series. In the beginning, Takumi hates to drive because his father makes him get up at 3:45 AM and deliver tofu to a hotel at the top of Akina Mt. at 4 AM ever since Takumi was 13. When Takumi was driving the car to the hotel, his father puts a cup full of water in the cup holder and Takumi must not spill it because if he did, then the tofu would get damaged. When Takumi was coming from the hotel (or down the mountain) Takumi would drift, or sideways skid, to go faster around the corners. He did this ONLY to get home faster and sleep more, not to improve his driving skills (he really didn't care about his driving skills during that time). The work was also boring and tiresome so he wanted to go home as fast as he could.
Takumi looks like a dead head, or half-asleep, most of the time. He rarely shows any kind of emotion on his face and is, most of the time, dense. He only shows anger when the people that cares for are in danger or are being talked bad about. Overall, Takumi is a pretty decent guy who just wants to get out of school and get a job.
When school is over, he works part-time at the GS gas station (in the anime, it's called the GS Gas Station. It's the Esso gas station in the manga which is a real oil company) with his best friend Ituski and his sempai, Iketani. In the gast station, Itsuki and Iketani talk constantly about cars and driving techniques non-stop! Takumi has no idea what they are talking about and Itsuki calls him a "moron." Takumi is ignorant about cars in general (parts, companies that make a certain model, etc...) but makes up for it in driving techniques. He also has something with Natsuki and used to be part of the soccer club. |
