We were newly married when I was sent overseas to Sculthorpe. We lived in and I commuted daily from Cromer to Sculthorpe. We both have the fondest of memories of the English and their kindness toward us. My two years at Sculthorpe was with the 47th Com

I was in the 1st Aviation Field Depot Squadron(SAC). In '51 we were first sent to RAF Upper Heyford, which was still under construction to lengthen the runways. We were then sent TDY to Schulthorpe for that following winter(at least that's one thing I r
ally remember), with the big storms and flooding at Hunstanton, etc. We were TDY all right as my little unit had an old rusty Nissen hut near a WWII RAF brick "facility". We learned how bring 2 cases of beer back to the hut on the back of a BSA 125cc. w
th a man(had to have long legs!) sitting on top of the beer while someone else drove. Good times and my introduction to many good things, including morning tea in bed.(Yes, I married her!)

My first posting after training as Clerk. We were billetted in the new Barrack Blocks. Soon after my posting to Sculthorpe I was redeployed in the workshops as a Signwriter (my civilian trade)
The R.A.F. were primarilly employed as Transport for U.S.A.F. I was involved in the change from the old RAF vehicle license no's. The C.O. was
Group Captain Parker adjutant Fl/lt Aldis
Those in the Wokshops were as follows F/Sgt Brightwell, Sgt. Mallet Cpl. Loader Cpl. Creswell
Taffy Llwelllyn(who was always practising on his trumpet), Harry Blackman, Terry Hetherington. The only R.A.F. a/c was a Tiger Moth
flown by the C.O. & Adj. I was fortunate enough to have a flip in it. I have since learned that it was removed to Lakenheath and was finally cannibalised. After a year I was posted to R.A.F. Benson to finish my National Service.

My father was assigned to the P11-27 Kestrel(became the AV-8 Harrier) project around the end of 1964. Our housing was at Sculthorp during that time. My brother and I were bused daily to Lakenheath for school. The runways at Sculthorp were not being use
at that time, and we used to play on them as well as in many of the unoccupied buildings on the base. Some of these had not seen use since the end of WWII, and I wish that I had had the presence of mind to keep some of the "collectable" items that we pl
yed with!
Upon leaving Norfolk in mid-66, my father was assigned to USAGUK in London. We were there until the end of 1968.
If anyone remembers my dad (Also Jerry Minor), please drop me a note. I remember him receiving the the Army Commendation Medal while we were there for helping establish some type of youth or community club. I think that he may have also worked part-time
as a bartender in either the NCO or Officer's Club.

What a site...gotta love it. Haven't seen any names I'm familiar with, but I reckon some'll come along sometime. I have seen some former AP's that were stationed there at the time I was, but they were probably in different flights than I was. I was young
hen, 17, and away from home for the first time and I was the epitome of the Ugly American. Most of the places I frequented were the
Palm Court, the Maids head, The Top and another bar in Hunstanton, and a couple in Fakenham. 'Fraid I didn't absorb much culture while I was there. Did learn to play darts though. The best times I had in my four year enlistment were spent at Sculthorpe, I
ll have to say that.

Being a young 20 years old at the time, I wondered what I had gotten myself into when US decided to bomb Libya. This occurred three days after I had arrived for a seven week TDY. I belonged to the 269CCS (Ohio Air Natl Guard) out of Springfield, Ohio.
bout ten members of our unit and I augmented a telecom unit from Texas Air National Guard. I felt like I was on the dark side of the moon when I first got there. The base personnel and the "locals" were very supportive and friendly, especially at the Red
Lion pub about a mile off the base. The comraderie was good but the bitter was better! Times were tense at work but the off time was great, especially train trips to London and the car rides to the coast!

I was sent to Skullthorpe on a fairly lengthy TDY during Operation Desert Shield. I was a weather observer there and made several friends whom I cannot recall the names of now. If anyone recalls me, I would love to hear from them. I had a little blue V
lvo 345 that I took friends off base in several times -- sometime to King's Lynn to the cinema. I think one of the guys I worked with went by "Dean". Sadly, I cannot remember any more names. I recall the whole experience with fondness.
Oh, one other thing. During one training exercise, either an F-111 or an F-4 was streaking low over the field at high speed and sucked up a bird. Those of us that stood watching at first thought the resulting smoke was "special effects", and part of the
exercise. Soon, we realized the plane was in trouble, was engulfed in flames. The pilot (and co-pilot) tried to put the plane in The Wash, but were not successful. They ejected at nearly the last minute, and the plane went down very close to a school w
ich was in session at the time. Scary stuff for the locals -- and for us.

Looking for Candice Candy Clizbe, and a brat that was a brownie, about age 7 in 1958 -- I only knew her first name "Blonka" and that she was the daughter of a non-comm. She appeared out of knowhere, in her brownie uniform, at the grand opening of the new

I lived at 2 Victoria Ave., Hunstanton from

They ran a small cafe near the train station and
a taxi service. Anyone who frequented the Top
Bar would remember them. I was in the 47th Air
Police Sqdn.

A very good site on an interesting and important part of anglo-American relations. Jim Baldwin's book is very good and I can also recommed "Spy Flights of the Cold war" by Paul Lashmar which has a lot on Sculthorpe in the 1950s.
Does anybody know if Mr Cunningham? is still around, the guy that locked himself in one of the nuclear weapons stores in 1958 and threatened to try and detonate a weapon?

How 'bout Willie Allen? SSGT Carlin Shank? (Think I've found him in Ohio.), Nick Shulick, Carl Decker, CMSGT Chmiliewski, (if he hasn't choked on a beer bottle by now!), Charlie Cerato? Or any others from the old Bomb Humper gang of 461/462XX'ers of the

Also, anyone who might know the whereabouts of Dennis Finkhouse, who was a Navigator with the 420th ARS '60 - '62, please post here, or e-mail me.

The three years that my wife and myself spent at Sculthorpe were three of the greatest years of our lives in and out of the service. We have kept in contact with more of our friends that we made while at Sculthorpe then any where else we were while in t

I worked on 66 Sqn RAF Regiment based at RAF West Raynham, but my family and I lived at Sculthorpe.
We had a lot of fun living there and were amongst the last RAF personnel to leave the base when the living accomodation was sold to the civilians. The main airfield area is now used by the military for various ground training exercises.
I am now based at RAF Honington on yet another Rapier Sqn and there are still a lot of personnel here who lived on Sculthorpe and remember the fun we had in the Families Club, the Hawks Haven and the Bowling Alley. I still have some pictures of Sculthorp
and once I find them out I will send them to you. Take Care

For those interested in additional information about RAF Sculthorpe, it is my understanding that Mr. Jim Baldwin has written another history of the base. I have sent an inquiry by mail to his address in Fakenham and will post the results here,as soon as
receive them. The book is said to cover the complete history of the base from WWII to the present and should be a welcome addition to everyone's collection of memorabilia

A friend of mine gave me this site and I hate to say this but I was on the last closing team. That was the best base I have been in my 16 years. When we closed it, there was 23 American military. I have great memories from there and would love to open her
back up. My oldest girl started school at the pre-school on base. The NCO Club would open for lunch everyday and we had Commanders call and holiday gatherings but that was all for the NCO Club. We had a rally on the base one weekend, there was a hangglide
club that would use the flightline all the time and for the last 6 months there were sheep on the flightline. As far as the Sculthorpe school when we closed the base the school was still open.

later in a wonderful townhome in Cley-Next-to-the-Sea, Holt, Norfolk and best childhood local friends were Jackie and David Turner. Parent's AF friends included Waters, Dykes and poor Hatfield. A most wonderful place for a childhood...ah for Noddy books,
hedgehogs, ocean smells, fish and chips, scones and lemon sherberts. The last couple years were on-base. I remember catching bees in the summer clover with childhood friends including Marsha Fritski, Patty & Owen Cox, Charlie Chandler, and Dickie Willamie

My husband and I just got back from 2 weeks in England. First stop was Sculthorpe RAF! The base is no longer active, but you can drive on. Some of the buildings are inhabited by commercial companies. One company is storing thousands of tires. They us
them to make asphalt. We took pictures of the PX and Commissary (very rundown) and the Bowling Alley (hardly standing). The flight line is fenced off. The family housing (brick duplexes) are no longer on the base. They have been bought by individual
amilies and some are not very well taken care of. I found my house and the lady showed me around. Things certainly look smaller after 40 years. Syderstone is barely there. It was a great trip to memory land. If anyone goes over, a great place to stay
is Congham Hall. B & B at its best. Great rooms and great food. I hope everyone has a chance to go back and visit fond memories. Farewell!

RAF Sculthorpe was my 1st assigment after basic training and MP school. I arrived there as a young 18 year old. I worked both gates, base patrol,& finally as patrol Sergeant. It was a SAC base when I was there, then in May or Jun of 1952 they changed ove
to a MATS base. When first stationed there, I used to work the Gates with RAF Militay Policeman. I became engaged to a girl from Norwich, but broke off the engagement after returning home, because she seemed like she wasn't in any hurry to come to the
States.

Was assigned to 19Tac Recon as a Defensive Weapons Operator on the RB-66. I am more than pleased to run across this site and equally happy of the many that have signed your guest register.
I have always kept tabs on the base through the years...and this time, I can tell that I wasn't thorough enough.
There were several times I thought I would have to buy a bottle of scotch for the parachute riggers.Ha! (As I read about some that signed in)
I am always interested in any of those that were assigned there.
While there I lived off-base in Hunstanton, rented from a Mr.Donald Insley a flat on York Ave. He was a retired postmaster, and his sister worked as the a chambermaid at the palace in London. Some fine memories!

I was assigned to the Base Personnel Office, 47 BW. In Jan 1958 my wife Betsy joined me with our 5 month of son. We lived the entire time in Heacham, near Hunstanton. During that time we had 2 more boys, both born at home thanks to our faithful midwife Nu
se Johnson, and wonderful doctor, Hugh Ford, who later became the physician to Her Majesty when in residence at Sandringham. We still hear from him each Christmas. Since retiring from the AF, We have returned numerous times since 1975 to visit good friend
in East Dereham, and Heacham and always pass by Sculthorpe. On one occasion years ago we were allowed to see where I used to work. The base was inactive at that time with only a British security guard at the main gate. While assigned to Sculthorpe, we me

My father, Ray L. ("Tommy") Thompson, was an
85th Bomron B-66 pilot, and I attended the base junior high school, where my most memorable teacher was Leonard Shaw, my closest friend was Dick Kennedy, and where I was privileged to be a member of the school "college bowl" team that bested the British p
ivate-school kids in a down-to-the wire championship bout in '62. Few of us "brats," I think, realized how good an education we were getting from our DoD teachers, our parents, and our way of life itself, so different from what "normal" Americans were exp
riencing. In 1986, I co-authored a "novelized" social history of the postwar Air Force with Walt Boyne (*The Wild Blue*, Crown, 1986) in large part because so few civilians understood anything about our experiences at places like Sculthorpe. Now, thanks t
the 'Net, sites like this one are themselves spreading the word, written first-person, to everyone's benefit. Thanks, Diane!

The base became non-operational several years ago but the airfield is still being used by the RAF and British Army for occasional exercises mainly using C130 aircraft and helicopters.
The technical and accomodation sites have been sold for light industrial use although the accomodation blocks may be knocked down in the near future. The married quarters were empty for several years but have now been refurbished, sold for private housing
and renamed as Wicken Green Village. This is the only part of the base which visitors can now access and is adjacent to Syderstone village off the A148 Fakenham - Kings Lynn road.
I was in the RAF and was living in one of the USAF bungalows as a married quarter between 1966 and 1969 and have now bought one of the bungalows.

It's been a long time since I was at RAF Sculthorpe. When I arrived the base was home to a Free Polish Air Force unit with only about 200 Yanks onboard. I was a weather observer with the weather detachment, WEADET 28-5, and as the base had only recently o
ened we had very little equipment to work with. The people in Fakenham were very friendly and I was treated very well. I have many fond memories. I wonder if anyone remembers the "Dirty Duck" out by the back gate. In Norwich there was the Samson and Hercu

Does anyone know if the Palm Court, in Kings Lynn is still standing???!!!
Members of my family visited the Sculthorpe area in 1995. They reported that the base housing was being used as some sort of apartments and entry was restricted. They were unable to get onto the base, but said it seemed to be largely unchanged from our
ra. I understand, from several English sites, that the base is sometimes used for auto races. Anyone know for sure?
Any recent history of the area would be appreciated. I plan a return visit within the next 2 years.

I was in the US army stationed at sculthorpe from July 1951 thru Novwmber 1953. I was in battery B, 39th AAA AW Bn. I met a lot of great people while stationed there. I used to go to the Rampant Horse Pup and even dated the Doughter of the owner for a whi
e. I remember the barber kidding me about bringing her candy. I returned in 1972 and was very dissapointed to find out the Fish and Chip shop I used to go to was closed and they had another one but it wasn't the same. I have a lot of very fond memories of
Sculthorpe and Fakenham and the people there. They treated me very nice, the way I would treat someone from another country if they were stationed near here.
Will close for now..... JerBear
P.S.
If anyone knows STANLEY ZEGAR from Wadsworth Illinois he would be glad to get a line from his friends. he was stationed in Scolthorpe from 1951 to 1953, I do not know what outfit he was with. All I know is he was in the US Air Force.

Worked as a Turret Systems Mechanic for Pappy Zehner in the 85th Bomb Squadron. Went from B-45 to B-66 Fire Control and the 47th A&E Squadron in 1958-59 time frame. Came back but had to leave when Kennedy cut the gold flow and closed the base. It was a
atelitte base/relex outfits and also served as a temporary base when runways at Lakenheath were being repaired in the F-111 days. I was at RAF Upper Heyford during that time (1972-1981). Have returned many times to the old base and now a Norfolk overflow
housing area. Those were the days my friend, I thought they would never end........

Greetings Everyone,
I myself wasn't stationed at Sculthorpe, but friends of mine were. I was stationed at RAF Lakeneheath and we both were Fire Protection Specialist (57150). I have been trying to locate him. His name was (Sgt.) Wayne Hunt and he was from the Los Angeles
rea. We also knew a Staff Sgt. Wade while there. Have some old pictures from Sculthorpe that I could donate for the site if you'd like. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Mike Shanley

Served with the 84th Bomb Squadron (Radar Shop). Interested in contacting other folks who were at Sculthorpe. The 84th and 85th Bomb Squadrons are now holding yearly reunions and there is a move to combine and hold reunions for all elements of the 47th
omb Wing that were at Sculthorpe starting in 2000.
