Jeanne Roland
Guillotined on November 8th 1792 for 'conspiracy against the revolutionary
spirit':
Jeanne's ride to the scaffold was a strange one, the mob being
mainly silent. Those paid to hurl insults and vegetables etc. put
up a half hearted attempt. At shouts of 'To the Guillotine, Whore!'
Jeanne replied "I'm going, Soon I'll be there, and those who sent me
will not be long following. I go to my death innocent and they will
go as criminals. You will applaud their deaths just as you applaud
mine"
She let a frightened fellow convicted man precede her on the guillotine
so he would not have to watch her die.
Execution of J. Roland
She lay down calmly, allowing herself to be strapped with no struggle
and was quickly beheaded.
