So who is Zokey anyway? |
IN THE BEGINNING... |
We grew up in neighboring neighborhoods in central Topeka. Listening to the trains at night and playing outside until the street lights came on. We never really knew each other during these days. Pokey being two years older and Zoey going to private school, we were really not on the roads to becoming Zokey...or were we? We were both active Girl Scouts in grade school thanks to our troop leader moms. In the summer of 1989 we ended up in the same unit at ToKaVaCa Day Camp. We became instant friends...OK, not really. Pokey a 6th grader and Zoey a 4th grader never really got to know each other. |

Can you guess which one is Pokey and which one is Zoey? |

As we kept active in Girl Scouts, we bumped into one another on several occassions, so that when we ended up in the same unit in 1994 at Camp Daisy for CIT, we knew of one another but not on a very personal basis. We were in CIT a very unique year. There were 27 of us so we had to move to Sleepy Hollow for our two weeks. Pokey was a CIT 2 and Zoey was a CIT 1. It was during CIT that we finally started getting to know each other. We both hung out in the same group of CIT's. Playing MOW, Concentration, wearing du rags, singing "Furd" at the top of our lungs, and attempting to fix Pickles. We had a great two weeks. (The next summer Pokey worked out at camp as a counselor and Zoey finished her second year of CIT.) |

The summer of 1996 was the first year we both worked at camp together. We talked a lot but were in a strange fight through the majority of the summer. Neither of us really knew what it was about to this day...OH WELL! |

The summer of 1997 was when we got close. The favorite special meal of the summer was Twin Meal. Playing off of the camper's confusion between us, we dressed alike with one of our Wrangle Aide buddies- ROWDY! We spent weekends hanging out together and learned we had a lot in common. We continued keeping in contact through the school year. |

The summer of 1998 was when Zokey was born. Netter created the name to be short for Pokey and Zoey, because it was easier to say....and....it stuck! (Get it??? ZOey+poKEY=ZOKEY!!!) We continued our favorite twin meal even confusing a counselor when we switched our name necklaces. We hung out constantly. We had a renewed love for camp! |

AND THEN, THE UNTHINKABLE HAPPENED!!! |
In the summer of 1999 because of low camper numbers and staff shortage Pokey's unit was closed and Pokey and Zoey were now CO-UNIT Leaders. Now we had the two of us under the same canvas roof. To make it easier we had the girls call us Zokey. It was almost as if we were one person. This summer was the one that changed us more than ever. Since camp has ended we talk all the time and have worked on several Girl Scout projects as well as this little web page dedicated to our favorite things. |
