Since I grew up on Long Island, most of my favorite sports teams come from New York. Below are my favorite teams in each of the four major sports, along with my favorite players on the team, and how I became a fan of the team. Hockey: In the past few years, hockey has become my favorite sport to watch. My favorite hockey team is the New Jersey Devils. I never really watched hockey until I was 10, and my best friend at the time happened to be a Devils fan. So, I became a Devils fan. My favorite player on the team at that time was goaltender Chris Terrari. My current favorite players are goaltender Martin Brodeur and center John Madden. The Devils just won their third Stanley Cup in franchise history. Baseball: My favorite baseball team is the New York Mets. I have been a Met fan for most of my life. I grew up in the 80's, and the Mets were the best New York team, so I became a fan. I always loved Gary Carter, and when I started to play baseball, I became a catcher. Currently my favorite Mets are Mike Piazza and rookie Ty Wiggington. Football: I actually have two favorite football teams. They are the New York Jets and the Oakland Raiders. I've always liked the Jets, and my parents are Raider fans, due to the fact that they got married on the same day that the Raiders won the Super Bowl in 1981. Since I haven't been up to speed on football in the past two years, I don't really have a favorite player. Basketball: My favorite basketball team is the New York Knicks. I have been a fan of their since I started watching basketball. I haven't watched a game since they traded Patrick Ewing, but the recent draft has given me hope for the team. Maybe I will start watching them again. Currently, I have no favorite player. Highlights: My favorite baseball games all came in the 2000 playoffs. I went to both Mets home games during the first round and was treated to a 16-inning game that ended on a homerun, and a 1 hit gem pitched by Bobby Jones. I also went to one of the Met-Yankee World Series games. The Mets lost. The only other playoff game I have ever been to was during the 1994 NBA playoffs where the Knicks beat the Pacers in game 7 to advance to the NBA Finals. |
