Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc was founded on the campus of Howard University on
January 16, 1920. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority is a community-conscious,
action-oriented organization. Arizona Cleaver, Myrtle Tyler, Viola Tyler,
Fannie Pettie, and Pearl A. Neal, with the guidance and encouragement of A.
Langston Taylor and Charles Robert Taylor, two members of Phi Beta Sigma
Fraternity, Inc., chartered Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Through the vision of
our "five pearls", the sorority was based on the founding principles
of Service, Scholarship, Sisterly Love, and Finer Womanhood. Our founders
believed that the community would benefit from the relationship of a true
brother/sister organization therefore, Zeta Phi Beta and Phi Beta Sigma
Fraternity are the first and only two Greek-letter organizations that are
constitutionally bound.
Zeta Phi Beta was the first Greek-lettered organization to form adult and
youth auxiliary groups. The Zeta youth auxiliaries are:
- The Zeta Amicae, also known as "Friends of Zeta"
- The Archonettes (high school ages)
- Amicettes (ages 9 - 13)
- Pearlettes (ages 4 - 8)
Zeta Phi Beta was also the first Greek letter to charter a chapter in
Africa (1948). Zeta Phi Beta has grown to more than 700 graduate and
undergraduate chapters with over 100,000 members located throughout the
U.S., Germany, West Africa, Italy, South Korea, the Bahamas, Caribbean, and
the Virgin Islands.
From the Sorority's inception, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. has long
demonstrated an interest in serving the needs of the community. Spanning the
Sorority's nearly thirty-year partnership with the March of Dimes to its
relationship with the Human Genome Project, Zeta Phi Beta has been at the
forefront of anticipating the ever-changing needs of society.
It is within this framework that the current International Grand Basileus
Barbara C. Moore proudly introduces the new International Service Initiative for
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.: Z-HOPE: Zetas Helping Other People Excel ™.
"Since 1920, our national service programs have evolved to meet the
critical societal needs of the time," said International Grand Basileus
Moore. "This administration has identified some key areas of concern as
part of our programmatic thrust, and all of our efforts will be consolidated
under the banner of Z-HOPE."
