316. George R. Buckalew Sr. Born abt 1760/1765 in Mecklenburg, NC. George R. died in Roane Co., TN, in April 1825; he was 65.
Alternate Spelling: Bucklew
Assumption: Born in Mecklenburg, NC, because his father is noted as having been on property there 5 Mar 1760.
Buckelew Traces, Issue 5, p. 554,"along with Mary Buckello, widow, was named administrator of the estate of Jonathan Buckalo... new info strongly suggests George was probably Jonathan's & Mary's son."
Buckelew Traces, Issue #3, p.489: ...ended up in Roane Co., TN...the man who lived on Cripple Creek between 1789 and 1810 in Montgomery, which became Wythe Co., VA. May have lived in NC before going to VA.
At the time of his 1780 marriage in Wilkes Co., NC, Wilkes adjoined Burke Co., the place where the George Buckelew moved from Mecklenburg Co, after selling land which had belonged to the old Jonathan Buckelew who was killed in 1776 during the Cherokee Indian Campaign.
1789, 31 Mar; Montgomery Co., VA, Tax Collectors List A: The tax collector called on George Bucklew to collect taxes owed. He was the only male over 21 in the house, there were no males between 16 & 21; he had no slaves but owned 6 horses. He did not appear on the 1788 Mont. Co. tax list, and the name was on the 1793 Wythe Co., VA, tax list C. (The Cripple Creek area became a part of Wythe Co. when it was created in 1789.) Others visited the same day in the Cripple Creek/Gleaves Branch area included Henry Garner, William Gleaves, Aron hoode, Margaret Porter, Randolph Retherford, William Retherford, Sr., & Mathias Wease.
1800, 17 April; Wythe Co., VA, Tax Collectors List B: The tax collector called on George Bucklew to collect taxes owed. He was the only male over 16, had no slaves, but owned 2 horses.
1807, 12 May; Wythe Co., VA, Deed: George Buckalew and wife Catherine to George Danner, all of Wythe Co., for 40 Shillings--5 acres of land on ?Behun Mill Creek. The tract adjoined land of Jeremiah Harry/Hany and Danner, Bucklelew's former survey & Danner's Mill Pond. Signed by George Buckalew and ?Caterin Buckalew. Ack. in May Court 1807, John P. Mathews, D. C.
1810 Wythe Co., VA, Census.
1811, 10 Sep; Wythe Co., VA, Deed: George (his ?X mark) Buckelew and wife Catharine (her X mark) to Joseph Bell, all of Wythe Co., for (left blank) -- 2 tracts of land. The first contained 150 acres on Babers mill branch, waters of Cripple Creek. It was at the foot of Lick Mountain, and adjacent land of Benj. Rogers, Sr. The 2nd tract of 180 acres was also on the waters of Cripple Creek, and adjacent "his own land." Acknowledged the same day in Court, John P. Mathews, D. C.
...Presumably headed west, and settled in Knox Co., TN.
1814, 26 Aug; Roane Co., TN; Deed: Joel Holt to George Buckallew, both of Knox Co., a 100 acre tract in Roane Co. on the south side of the Clinch River. Wit. William Buckallew & Richard Fowler.
1822 Roane Co., TN, Deed: George (could write) Buckalew to Jonathan Buckalew, land on the south side of the Clinch River. Wit. Daniel ?Bevin & James Buckalew.
1823, 28 Dec; Roane Co., TN, Deed: George Buckalew, Sr., to George Buckalew, Jr., 75 acres north side of Clinch River, 1/2 of the 150 acres conved to George Buckalew from Henry Mounger. Bounded by the tract north of the river and a line to a stake of James Buckalew's corner. Wit.: Joel Holt & Edward Botler (Butler).
1825, Jan Roane Co., TN Court Minutes: The deed from George Buckaloo, Sr. to George Buckaloo for 150 acres of land was ack by oath of Joel Holt & Edward Butler. From film 560.092, SL Gen Lib, per Polly Goodwin., p. 254.
1825, 27 Apr, Roane Co., TN Court Minutes: State vs George Buckalew & James Buckaloo came the Att. Gen. and Joel Holt having professed judgment to the cost with assent of court entered Nolle Prosequi dismissed. From Film 560.092, SL Gen Lib, per Polly Goodwin., p. 254.
1830, 23 Mar; Roane Co., TN, Deed: David L. Alexander to William (married Catherine Buckalew in 1823) and Overton P. Goodwin, of Roane Co., for $500, 1/2 of 150 acres of land agreeable to a deed from George Buckallew to George Buckalew, Jr., dated 28 Dec 1823. Wit.: David Alexander, Nelson Ladd & Beal Goodwin.
1835, 10 July, Roane Co., TN, Deed: O.P. Goodwin to William Goodwin, both of Roane Co., for $206.50, a 37 acre tract on the north side of the Clinch River. The land was 1/4 part of 150 acres agreeable to a deed that George Buckallew, Sr., made to George Buckallew, Jr., on 28 Dec 1823, apparently wit. by Thomas Gallaher & Amos Hardin. The tract adj. "James Buckallew conditional corner thence with the conditional line to a stake on the river bank." Signed by Overton P. Goodwin. Wit. by Philip Fitts & Nelson Ladd. The Goodwins were brothers, and William Goodwin had married Catherine Buckalew in 1828.
On 8 November 1780 when George R. was 20, he married Catherine Smith, daughter of William Smith & Catherine Hood, in Wilkes, NC. Born in 1760 in ? NC. Catherine died in Roane Co., TN, in 1826; she was 66. Nickname: Katy.

On 14 January 1798 John married Rachel Ball, in Middlesex Co., NJ.
They had the following children:
323. Elizabeth Buckalew. Born on 21 January 1770 in VA. Elizabeth died in Jefferson Co., AL, in 1812; she was 41. Nickname: Betsy.
23 May 99 e-mail from Claire Furth to Frederick Jackson "Jack" Buckelew: "A couple of things also lead me to the possibility that William Green's wife Elizabeth was the daughter of Jonathan (Jon?), brother to George. This would explain why George sold them land from Richard's estate so cheap and why they named a son Jonathan."
About 1790 when Elizabeth was 19, she married William Green, son of Green. Born about 1768 in VA.

same on 4 Jan 1785 to Christopher WARD who conveyed on 13 February 1797 50 acres lying in the fork of Little Stephens Creek of Savannah River, line between sd George BUCKELEW and sd WARD, to Ogden COCKEROFTS corner; thirdly 30/130 acres conveyed by Ogden COCKEROFT 4 Apr 1798, being part of 400 acres originally granted to Richard BUCKELEW decd and descended to George BUCKELEW son and heir, who convey same to COCKEROFT. E-mail from Claire Furth to Jack Buckelew, 28 Aug 99: Following is an exact transcription from the will of your William Buckelew(sic) [should have been William "Green"] of Marengo Co. "... It is my will that my grand children that is the children and heirs of William Green my son the children & heirs of Elizabeth Butler shall have their full portion of the valuation of my property
(except the land) to be paid them in money by my Executors hereinafter named which amount of money must be raised out of the other property or to be paid by the several heirs to whom the negroes are devised .."
