Eighth Generation (Continued)

Family of Ezekiel Buckalew (686) & Rachel Green (745)

1463. Matilda Buckalew.

1929, 29 Jan.; Marengo Co., AL, Marriage: Matilda Buckaloo to Jesse B. Overton. Ezekiel "Buckaloo" (father?) listed as "security." Marengo Co. Marriages, Book A, p. 186.

On 30 January 1829 Matilda married Jesse B. Overton, in Marengo Co., AL.

Another source has the same marriage date but gives the groom's name as James Ouston.

1464. William H. Buckalew. William H. died after 1870.

1832, 14 April: Married to Annie Peacock by J.G. Williams; Jacob Green, bondsman. Marengo Co. Marriage Book 1, p. 261. Name spelled "Buckaloo."

Settled near Zebulon Buckalew.

1836, 15 Sep; Clarke Co., AL: Bought 40 acres of land (SW qtr of NW qtr, Sec. 23, Twp 13 N, R 3E).

Continued to live at Shiloh until Annie died between 1843 and 1847.

1847, 14 Nov: Married to Mary Gibson by A.B. Hosea, J.P.; Loderic Green, bondsman. License issued 13 Nov 1847. Both of age.

1850 Marengo Co., AL, Census. Mary (Gibson), wife (2nd).

1853, 11 Aug; Marengo Co., AL; Mortgage: Borrowed money from Thomas Hosea. Collateral: "crop of cotton now in cultivtion on T. (or J.) H. Skinner plantation" until 1 Jan 1854 repayment. Witness: Has (?Wes) A. McClure.

In Clarke Co., MS, by 26 Jan 1854 when his oldest son married there.

1860 & 1870 Clarke Co., MS, Census.

Settled first in the Energy area, but moved to Quitman after Civil War.
His son Jasper's death certificate said his mother was Mary Ann Ballard, but record of marriage not found.

I'm wondering if wives #2 and #3 may be one and the same. Both were Marys and the second was Mary Ann. If they are the same one, she could have been a widow, one of her surnames being by previous marriage, i. e., "Mary Ann Gibson Ballard."

1995, 20 Apr; Letter to Les (Lester Trammell) Buckalew from Jack (Frederick Jackson) Buckelew: Citing fact that Zebulon, his son Abram, and William H. Bucke(a)lew and their families were living in three adjacent dwellings in Clarke Co., MS, at the time (3 Aug) of the 1860 census ... "This confirms (maybe ?) my belief that Ezekiel and Zebulon were brothers, and William H. moved from AL after his older children, James Lafatte, etc -- left because of re-marriage when Annie Peacock died. I thing "Uncle Zeb" let William H. and "new wife" Mary move near him. James Lafatte was already married (1854 Clarke Co. MS to Eliza Barnes), and maybe felt better towards his father and new mother? The 1860 census needs to be rechecked for ages of Wm and Mary. 'He has made himself younger' with the new wife and move to new state!?

"... my grandfather [Willie Windfield Buckelew] always said that his father--James Lafatte--had a favorite 'Aunt Polly.' "

On 14 April 1832 William H. first married Annie Elizabeth Peacock, daughter of & Elizabeth Perritt, in Marengo Co., AL. Born in 1816. Annie Elizabeth died in 1847; she was 31.

Extract from John Pierce: "After the death of Annie, her children apparently couldn't get along with their stepmother. William and Mary didn't move to MS until about 1857, but James had settled there five years earlier with Sarah and Martha. Manson may have come at the same time, or later; ditto Charlotte. William and Catherine both remained behind in Alabama with their grandparents Ezekiel and Rachel in Clarke Co., AL, and both married and raised their families there."

They had the following children:
2622 i. James LaFatte (1833-1891)
2623 ii. Sarah Jane (1835-1854)
2624 iii. Martha Ann (1837-1865)
2625 iv. William H. (1839-1916)
2626 v. Queen Charlotte (1844->1860)
2627 vi. Manson M. (1843->1870)
2628 vii. Samantha Ann (1844-)
2629 viii. Catherine Elizabeth (~1847-)

On 14 November 1847 William H. second married Mary Jane Gibson, in Marengo Co., AL. Born about 1827 in AL.

They had the following children:
2630 i. A. Jasper (1850-1932)

2634 v. Josephine (1860-)

Subject: Buckelew/Ballard??

I have never found a marriage for William H. Buckelew and Mary BALLARD.

Jasper Buckelew was child of William and Mary GIBSON per census and marriage record dates.

My thoughts are that after William died Mary GIBSON BUCKELEW married a BALLARD and that is why the informant on Jasper's death certificate said his mother was Mary Ballard.

I will check Clarke CO MS marriage records soon. The marriage probably took place after 1870 and is not on the "net" page.

1465. Abner Buckalew. Born on 22 January 1814 in SC. Abner died on 10 December 1893; he was 79. Buried in Hickory Grove C., Laurel, Jones Co., MS.

2642 vii. Martha (1848-)
2643 viii. William W. (~1848-)

1466. John Buckalew. Born in 1818.

This John's parentage has not been determined. There is reason to believe, however, that he is son of Ezekiel or one of Ezekiel's brothers, one of whom was Zebulon. Zebulon had a daughter that married Peter Loper Beech, brother of Nancy Beech, John's wife.

Much of the information on the descendants of this John Buckalew and Nancy Beech/Beach is from Reba Tomlinson; 106 Tomlinson Rd.; Granburg, TX 76049.

On 21 October 1832 when John was 14, he married Nancy Beech, daughter of William Christopher Beech (1770-before 1836) & Loper (-about 1835), in Washington Co., AL. Born in 1809.

On 1 April 1838 when Jonathan was 20, he married Mary M. Wilkerson, in Marengo Co., AL. Born about 1816 in AL.
