Baldry never achieved the sustained commercial success that his talents merited. An undeniably important figure in the history of British rock music, Baldry was a fine blues/rock vocalist who began his career singing folk and blues as a teenager during the 50's. During the sixties Baldry (who was nick-named Long John because of his height - 6' 7") sang with several of the leading groups on the London R'n'B scene. In 1961 he joined Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated and a year later sang on their album "R&B At The Marquee", the first British blues album. 1963 saw him as a member of Cyril Davies' All Stars, and following Davies' death in early '64, Baldry re-named the group The Hoochie Coochie Men, and included Rod Stewart as a second vocalist. He was so highly thought of at this time that he appeared as a solo performer on a Beatles TV special in 1964 The Hoochie Coochie Men broke up in the autumn of 1965 and Baldry and Stewart both joined the short-lived Steampacket along with Julie Driscoll and Brian Auger. After that enterprise folded, he formed Bluesology (autumn '66) which also included Marsha Hunt and a young Elton John. Throughout this time he was also busy recording solo material and in 1967 he did go on to reach No. 1 in the UK charts with the orchestrated pop ballad "Let The Heartaches Begin".
