HISTORY
Star Trek:  The Next Generation ( sometimes referred to as ST:TNG) was first aired the week of September 28th, 1987.  The series premier was the episode called Farpoint.  It was a 2-parter.  The first episode was watched by millions of people.

Star Trek: TNG takes place in the 24th century which is about 80 years after the time of the original series (also known as TOS).  Although technology has changed, Starfleet's mission is still to "Seek out new life and new civilizations".
this is what the TNG series is all about.

In 1991 TNG aired its 100th episode (Redemption).  That is 21 more than the original series.  The show ended after 176 episodes which is total of 97 more than the original.  Star Trek in general celebrated it's 25 year existence where for the 1st time ever, both casts came together.

In 1992, (end of 6th season) a new contract was signed to make 1 more season and some motion pictures.  Many people feel the last season was the best and people waited anxiously for the last show - "All Good Things".
