Star
Trek: TNG takes place in the 24th century which is about 80 years after
the time of the original series (also known as TOS). Although technology
has changed, Starfleet's mission is still to "Seek out new life and new
civilizations".

In 1991 TNG aired its 100th episode (Redemption). That is 21 more than the original series. The show ended after 176 episodes which is total of 97 more than the original. Star Trek in general celebrated it's 25 year existence where for the 1st time ever, both casts came together.
In
1992, (end of 6th season) a new contract was signed to make 1 more season
and some motion pictures. Many people feel the last season was the
best and people waited anxiously for the last show - "All Good Things".
2305: Jean-Luc Picard born in LaBarre, France on Earth.
2324: Beverly Howard, the future Beverly Crusher, is born.
2327: Jean-Luc Picard graduates from Starfleet Academy.
2333: Jean-Luc Picard assumes command of the U.S.S. Stargazer.
2335: William Thomas Riker is born in Valdez, Alaska, on Earth.
2336: Deanna Troi is born on Betazed.
2337: Natasha Yar is born on Turkana IV.
2338: Data is discovered on planet Omicron Theta.
2340: Worf is born on the Klingon Homeworld.
2346:
Worf's parents are killed by Romulans at the Khitomer massacre. Worf is
adopted by a human Starfleet officer, Sergey Rozhenko.
2355: U.S.S. Stargazer is nearly destroyed in the Battle of Maxia.
2357:
Riker graduates from Starfleet Academy. His first assignment is the
ill-fated U.S.S. Pegasus.
2361:
Riker, now aboard the Starship Potemkin, participates in a rescue
mission at planet Nervala IV. A transporter malfuntion creates an exact
duplicate of Riker who remains undiscovered on the planet until 2369.
2363:
Starship Enterprise-D, the fifth starship to bear the name, is launched
under the command of Jean-Luc Picard.
William Riker serves as Executive offficer aboard the U.S.S. Hood prior
to his assignment to the Enterprise-D.
2364: First season of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
First know contact with the Ferengi. First contact with Q.
Natasha Yar is killed at planet Vagra II.
Extragalactic conspiracy uncovered attemption to infiltrate Starfleet
Command.
2365: Second season of Star Trek: the Next Generation.
Dr. Katherine Pulaski serves as Enterprise-D chief of medical officer.
Dr. Beverly Crusher takes a leave to head up Starfleet Medical.
First known contact with the Borg.
2366: Third season of Star Trek: the Next Generation.
Enterprise-C briefly enters this time from the past.
Worf accepts discommendation for the acts his late father did not
commit against the Klingon Empire.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard is captured by the Borg, becoming Locutus of
Brog.
2367: Fourth season of Star Trek: the Next Generation.
Thirty-nine starships destroyed by the Borg in the battle of Wolf 359.
Locutus of Borg is captured by a Enterprise-D away team and restored to
his old self.
Alexander Rozhenko, son of Worf and K'Ehleyr, is born.
Wesley Crusher is accepted to Starfleet Academy.
Jean-Luc Picard serves as arbiter of succession to determine the new
leader of the Klingon High Council.
2368: Fifth season of Star Trek: the Next Generation.
Duras family attempts to seize control of the Klingon High Council,
plunging the Empire into a brief civil war.
Wesley Crusher admits helping to cover up a fatal acciden at Starfleet
Academy and is held back for a year.
2369: Sixth season of Star Trek: the Next Generation.
Worf finds evidence that his father may still be alive. His search
leads him to a secret Romulan prison camp where he finds Klingons
and Romulans living together. He vows never to tell.
The Enterprise, the Romulans, the Klingons, and the Cardassians all
joined forces to assemble a puzzle that creates a message from their
original humanoid ansestor.
The duplicate William Thomas Riker is found on Nervala IV. He takes his
middle name to avoid confusion with his counterpart, the Executive
officer on the Enterprise-D.
2365: Seventh season of Star Trek: the Next Generation.
Lore is dismantled while attempting to lead the Borg on a new campaign
of conquest.
A Federation-wide "speed limit" of warp 5 is imposed after the
discovery of evidence that excessive use of warp drive may damage the
fabric of space.
