Left of the dial in L.A.

88.9 / KUCI / Eclectic / Irvine Access live streaming on the KUCI web site.
KUCI is a service of the University of California at Irvine. Broadcast range limited to most parts of Orange County. This area still has a large amount of great college radio.

Left of the dial in L.A.

Pasadena City College Radio 89.3 / KPCC / Eclectic / Pasadena
In March of 1999, this once eclectic student-run station said bye-bye to the music, turned the day-to-day operation of the station to Minnesota Public Radio, dropped almost ALL of its local programms, and became Talk Radio, NPR style. "Intellegent Talk" they call it. Seems there is no room for creativity even in some circles of college radio.

Left of the dial in L.A.

Santa Monica College Radio 89.9 / KCRW / Eclectic / Los Angeles
KCRW is community radio at its best. Is there a particular style of music you like that commercial stations refuse to play? Call KCRW and become a member! KCRW is a service of Santa Monica College.

<a href=KPFK Public Radio 90.7 / KPFK / Eclectic / Los Angeles Access live streaming on the KPFK web site.
Standard College Radio Fare. Lots of bizarre music played here, which is why KPFK is among a large group of excellent public radio stations here.

Left of the dial in L.A.

91.5 / KUSC / Classical / Los Angeles Access live streaming on the KUSC web site.
KUSC is a service of the University of Southern California. Standard NPR run college station. Too bad.

Commercial Radio in L.A.

92.3 / KKBT / Urban Contemporary / Los Angeles
In June of 1999, 92.3 "The Beat" switched frequencies with "Mega Oldies 100.3" John London and his "House Party" posse stayed on with the "New Mega Oldies 92.3" All that has now changed. London is gone, comidian Sinbad is set to be the new morning man as I write this; and "Hot 92.3" is fast becomming a clone of "The Beat". Owned by Clear Channel Worldwide.

92.7 / KMLT / KLIT / KELT "Jill-FM" / Adult Contemporary / Adelanto - Fountain Valley - Thousand Oaks
This is a tri-cast (KLIT, KMLT, KELT) of soft contemporary stations that are all rim shots on 92.7 into L.A. They have spotty signals due to the three stations low power and the surrounding mountainous terrain. The station is going by the "Jill-FM" moniker - which is a female targeted version of the "Jack" format. Very little personality and a large playlist of songs that target women.

93.1 / KCBS / Classic Rock / Los Angeles
“The Arrow” has been around for about two years. Its format is very similar to KLOS and the old album rock station on 101.9, which changed format about two years ago. Like many standard Classic rock stations, "The Arrow" focuses on a select few songs by each artist, rather than playing anything unknown. Another place to hear "freebird" or "Majic Carpet Ride". This used be an AC/Oldies stations in the early 90’s. 93.1 was also home to a CHR in the 80’s known as “Hit Radio 93, KKHR”. Owned by CBS.

93.5 / KFOX / Korean / Los Angeles
Radio Seoul, as in Korea!

93.9 / KZLA / Country / Los Angeles
LA is a very large city. However, it is still out west where country formats are very successful in any market. LA is no exception. KZLA is the largest country station in town. A pretty standard Country outlet with very good jocks. Owned by Bonneville International.

94.3 / KIKF / Country / Garden Grove
Localized country.

94.7 / KTWV / Smooth Jazz / Los Angeles
Artists on “The Wave” include John Tesh and Yanni. All in all, KTWV is more new age music than jazz. Great for offices and Doctor offices. Owned by CBS.

95.1 / KFRG / Country / San Bernardino
“K-FROG 95.1” is the Inland Empire’s best country station. Also heard on 92.9 FM in the Temecula Valley. Very standard Country mix with entertaining jocks.

95.5 / KLOS / Album Rock / Los Angeles
Ah, the WMMR of LA. Many Angelenos mistake this for an oldies station. No wonder! It is the only AOR format in LA. Most rock fans in the basin prefer the new wave sound of KROQ. However, the nationally syndicated Mark and Brian Show is the stations claim to fame.

Owned by Salem Communications.
95.9 / KFSH / Christian Contemporary / Anaheim / "The Fish" Can only be accessed directly through the stations web site.
"The Fish" is owned by Salem Communications, the largest Christian radio owner in the country. The music is upbeat pop music with a Christian slant. The best way to discribe this format is to compare it to a veggie burger. It almost tastes like a real hamburger, it's probably better for you....but it's just not right! A clone of a CHR in almost every way otherwise.

96.3 / KFSG / Classic Christian Music / Los Angeles
I didn't know such a thing even existed! Old-time religios music for a very limited audience.

96.7 / KWIZ / Spanish / Los Angeles
More Spanish programming for Los Angeles. They were the areas Vietnamese station, but flipped to Spanish two years ago. KWIZ is not audible in the Inland Empire where the frequency is shared with KCAL.

KCAL Rocks 96.7 / KCAL / Album Oriented Rock / Redlands
This is the best radio station in all of Riverside if you love heavy metal. Danzig, Metallica and Ozzy Osbourne here means another day at the office. Very similar to WIYY in Baltimore, but better. KCAL has great jocks that compliment the music, and definately cater to the early 20-something crowd. KCAL is not audible in the Los Angeles city limits where KWIZ broadcasts over the same frequency.

FM Talk 97.1 97.1 / KLSX / Talk-Alternative / Los Angeles
“Real Radio 97.1” is the alternative to all of those static interfered talk stations on the AM dial. Talk here is from an entertaining, young point of view. A good example is Howard Stern in the morning and Tom Leykis in the afternoon. This could almost be called the template for CBS's "Extreme Talk" format that is rolling out on FM stations like WNEW in New York. Owned by CBS.

97.9 / KLAX / Regional Mexican Music / Los Angeles
Los Angeles has a huge Mexican Population, and KLAX is catering to the regional scene.

98.3 / KRTO / R&B Oldies / West Covina
KRTO simulcasts KACE.

Star 98.7 98.7 / KYSR / Modern AC / Los Angeles
“Star 98.7” is pretty much a standard Modern AC with a very popular morning show that also airs on KALC in Denver. Chumbawama, Sarah, Billie Myers, U2, Shawn Colvin, Matchbox 20, Paula Cole are some of the artists featured here. Owned by AMFM.

KGGI-FM 99.1 / KGGI / Urban CHR / Riverside
Originating from the Inland Empire, “99-1, KGGI” does its job of delivering urban and dance hits to Riverside and San Bernardino counties. AMFM owns KGGI.

Owned by Salem Communications 99.5 / KKLA / Christian Talk / Los Angeles
Most of the programming on KKLA is Christian oriented talk. Salem Broadcasting, one of the largest religious broadcasters in the country, owns KKLA and also owns 95.9 KFSH "The Fish".

KOLA-FM 99.9 / KOLA / Oldies / Redlands
The oldies station for the "Inland Empire", which is pretty much San Bernardino and Riverside. A standard "good time oldies" type station.

Mega 100 100.3 / KCMG / Oldies / Los Angeles
“Mega 100.3” was an oldies stations when I lived there back in 1995. It was a heavy metal station known as “Pirate Radio 100.3”. The station was later known as “B-100”, “The New Rhythm of Southern California”. The present format is “jammin” oldies, a hybrid of an Urban Oldies (Motown, Disco, Soul, R&B). Owned by AMFM.

101.1 / KRTH / Oldies / Los Angeles
The only golden oldies station in town, “K-EARTH 101”, has not gone sloppy on us. It was the best oldies station before 100.3 changed format. Now it is one of the best oldies stations in the country. Top notch air staff with a great local feel make this "good time oldies" type station a huge money maker!

101.9 / KSCA / Regional Mexican / Los Angeles
KSCA is a former album rock station. Now the number one station in Los Angeles.

102.3 / KJLH / Urban AC / Compton
“Rhythm 102.3” is the only African American owned FM station in town. KJLH plays the great mainstream urban hits from KKBT and the smooth R&B from KACE. However, its signal is not received very well in Orange County. In addition, KJLH has no translators or boosters to reach Victorville, the Antelope Valley or Ventura County. Straight outa Compton!

KIIS-FM 102.7 / KIIS / Contemporary Hits / Los Angeles
“102.7 KIIS FM” is best known for its morning host, Rick Dees. He hosts the daily morning show here. Billy Burke, formally of WCAU FM, does a midday shift here. “KIIS” plays your typical CHR artists such as Puff Daddy and Madonna. One significant thing about this station is that it is always one of the top-billers in the entire country. Who says CHR's don't make any money! Owned by Jacor Communications.

Channel 103.1 103.1 / KACD / A.A.A. / Santa Monica
“Groove 103.1” was the premiere all club music station in the world. However, Jacor thinks a WRNR-type format (I would say ‘RNR is more AAA than progressive) would work better on this frequency. Why? This present dance format has brought in the highest ratings ever for the 103.1 frequency. In its brief history the 103.1 frequency has been soft AC and all techno MARS-FM. Let’s hope 103.1 stays dance. BUT, Ken Roberts sold KACD to Jacor or Clear Channel or whoever? The station is now an AAA known as “Channel 103.1”.

KOST-FM 103.5 / KOST / Adult Contemporary / Los Angeles
KOST is the only commercial soft adult contemporary station in town. At night, KOST is heavy on love songs. Very similar to the "Lite" stations in many other markets.

103.9 / KACE / R&B Oldies / Inglewood
Like “Groove Radio”, KACE is one of a kind. KACE is not audible in the Inland Empire where KCXX broadcasts over the same frequency. Years ago, this was an urban station known “V-103.9” simulcasting KCXX. KACE is the original "Jammin" type oldies in LA.

X103.9 103.9 / KCXX / Modern Rock / Arrowhead
“X 103.9” is licensed to the mountain community of Lake Arrowhead in the San Bernardino Mountains. Its coverage area includes all of the Inland Empire. "X103.9" is your standard Modern Rocker, playing hit oriented Alternative Rock. KCXX is not audible in the city limits of Los Angeles where KACE broadcasts over the same frequency.

104.3 / KBIG / Hot Adult Contemporary / Los Angeles
“K-BIG 104” is the only true hot AC format in town. KBIG is home to Alanis, Hootie and Jewel and many pop tunes from the eighties.

104.7 / KCAQ / Urban CHR / Oxnard
Yet another CHR for Southern California. “Q 104.7” may originate from Ventura County, but it pumps a pretty strong signal into many parts of LA basin. Like many California CHR’s, they seem to be heavy on the urban.

KKGO Classical Radio 105.1 / KKGO / Classical / Los Angeles
Who says that the people of Los Angeles lack interest in the arts? They still have a commercial classical station that serves fans faithfully. However, the station needs a good web site to keep its listeners updated on the happenings in the local arts community.

105.5 / KBUE / Regional Mexican / Los Angeles
105.5 was known as the “headbangers station” back in the 80’s and early 90’s. No wonder, KNAC 105.5 rocked! KNAC changed calls to KBUE a few years back. Of course, the new station plays Tejano.

105.9 / KPWR / Urban CHR / Los Angeles
“Power 106” is a station for the people who love hip-hop. Another one of my favorites, Power 106 is truly the home for LA’s hottest music. This used to be an Adult CHR during the 80’s known as “Magic 106”. Owned by Emmis Broadcasting.

106.3 / KALI / Vietnamese / Los Angeles
Where else can you hear a commercial Vietnamese station 90% of the time?

KROQ Radio 106.7 / KROQ / Modern Rock / Pasadena
KROQ (pronounced K-Rock) was the first Modern Rock station anywhere when it signed on. KROQ is now home to the nationally syndicated and televised "Loveline" program. KROQ is still probably the best Modern Rock station on the planet. Like most other, “Mod Rockers”, they play a lot mainstream stuff. However, things at KROQ are lot better than sister ‘HFS. KROQ is home to a lot of great air personalities, something that most Modern Rockers are lacking in. Owned by CBS, like the other "K-Rock".

107.1 / KLYY / Spanish CHR / Arcadia
Spanish Hit Radio with a weak signal for L.A.! This one time Modern Rock outlet recently flipped to a Latino format, calling itself Viva! 107.1. As a Modern Rock outlet, the former "Y107" couldn't compete against KROQ, the new Latino format will also have some heavy competition to deal with.

K-Love 107.5 / KLVE "K-Love" / Spanish Adult Contemporary / Los Angeles Live streaming can be accessed on the KLVE web site.
Geez, how many spanish stations can you have?! This one is all Spanish language love songs. Sort of Spanish Adult Contemporary for L.A., call it S.A.C.

107.9 / KWVE / Religious / San Clemente
God for L.A.! Hey, it is called "The City Of Angels".

A note here about all L.A. Clear Channel Stations: They are all streaming on-line. To listen, you have to download their version of Windows Media Player. (Doing this from IE 5 or better worked best for me) Once you click on any listen link from a Clear Channel site, it will work for all the rest of them.
