The Gaskill Family Bible, owned by
John Milton Gaskill was passed on to son, Alexander Carraway Gaskill,
and then passed on to son, Milton James Gaskill. Transcription by
Barbara Rudisill Lucas.
The Bible
containing the Family Record appears to be one of a set entitled
Henry’s Exposition, Gen. – Deu., Vol. I,
published in 1828.
The
condition and appearance of the Bible supports the oral history that
during the Civil War, Northern troops vandalized and looted the Gaskill
home and threw the Bible in the river. One of the slaves witnessed this
and later retrieved it for the family.
