PREFACE

Much of the information presented here and in the indexed files accessible from the main Branches and Roots page is the result of countless hours spent pouring over 23 issues of the Kimbrough Genealogy Quarterly, published from 1964 to1976. There is quite a bit of substantiating documentation for much of this data. However, so many Virginia records from the 1600s were destroyed that complete documentation for that period is next to impossible. To quote Felix A. Kimbrough, author of several of the articles in these Quarterlies, "Some data, legends and the repeated use of certain given names and the history of the times will be used in an effort to establish the identity of the wives and children of Colonist John Kimbrough. It is fully realized that this procedure is subject to question, but any researcher who has worked in the area of the destroyed records of Virginia is fully aware that full documentary data on a family of this area is rare. In addition, this is an exploratory effort to encourage others to join in this effort and come forth with better data than is presently available."

Generation No. 1

1. John1 Kimbrough was born Abt 1640 in British Isles, and died 1715-1716 in New Kent County, VA. He married (1) Mary Douglas Abt 1660 in British Isles. He married (2) Margaret Buckley Aft 1687.

Notes

FROM KIMBROUGH GENEALOGICAL QUARTERLY-VOL 1, NUMBER 1 (August, 1963)

It appears Colonist John Kimbrough coined a name for himself and his descendants, or the name became altered beyond current recognition by the language and educational difficulties experienced during the colonial days.

Legend has it that John Kimbrough arrived in the Colonies about 1666 with a wife, Mary, said to have been a Douglas and children John, Jr., Marmaduke and Jane, in the company of a Robert Douglas.

John Kimbrough is found in Maryland from 1667 to 1676 in numerous court records. He is first found in Port Tobacco, Maryland. He is late found at St. Maries (Mary's). He appartently left Port Tobacco prior to 1673 as there is found a land transfer of that date stating the land was formerly held by John Kimberely. No records have been found to show Kimberely is a variant spelling of Kimbrough, but the absence of records to the contrary and sparsity of population leads to this belief. He left Maryland sometime in 1676. He is next found in New Kent County, VA in that same year.

Children of John Kimbrough and Mary Douglas are:

+ 2 i. John2 Kimbrough, Jr., born Abt 1661 in British Isles; died 1743 in New Kent, Hanover, VA.

Notes

Marmaduke was married first to a woman names Anne and together they had a son named John Kimbrough.

May have been the son of Colonist John Kimbrough and third wife, Margaret.

FROM KIMBROUGH GENEALOGICAL QUARTERLY-VOL 1, NUMBER 2 (April 1964)

Records are found of a Margaret Kimbrough and a Benjamin Kimbrough, believed to be children of Colonist John Kimbrough and his wife Margaret. The Marmaduke Kimbrough of Virginia and North Carolina in the 1730's to 1760's mentions his youngest sister Margaret, and places Marmaduke as a son of Margaret. Records imply Nathaniel Kimbrough was a brother of the above Marmaduke.

Some believe him to be the son of John Kimbrough, Jr. and Elizabeth? due to the age the Colonist John Kimbrough would have been at Marmaduke's birth. However, if Margaret, his third wife, was presumably much younger,it is certainly a strong possiblity that Marmaduke was a child of this marriage. Also, Buckley Kimbrough is known to be a child of the marriage of John Kimbrough and Margaret Natin or Buckley and Buckley and Marmaduke are closely allied, lending credance to the theory that they are brothers.

Children of Marmaduke Kimbrough and Mary Turner are:

+ 40 i. Anna4 Kimbrough, born October 27, 1761 in Surry Co., NC; died March 16, 1815.

41 ii. George Kimbrough, born November 03, 1764.

+ 43 iv. Ormond Kimbrough, born January 30, 1768 in "Shallowford", Rowan, NC; died Abt 1820 in Surry County, NC.

44 v. Marmaduke Kimbrough, born November 08, 1769.

Notes

I have conflicting information on the spouse of Anna Kimbrough. Some sources say the Marmaduke Kimbrough's daughter, Anna, m. William Alston. Other sources say that she married Wyatt Garner.

I have found several sources that say Ann Kimbrough, daughter of Buckley Kimbrough and Margaret Naten, married William Alston.

Notes

Ormond Kimbrough was born on January 30, 1768, in Rowan County, North Carolina. He was the son of Marmaduke and Mary Turner Kimbrough. His date of birth is shown in the Church of England Prayer Book originally owned by his brother, George. Ormond was only about 18 months old when his father died. At about the age of 13 he got a step-father, John Allen. In 1781, his mother's brothers, Elias and Roger Turner were removed as his guardians because they had "removed and attached themselves to the Enemies of the U S by taking up arms against same and not having discharged trust reposed in them by Testator." They were replaced by Joseph Williams. Ormond was only 13 at the time. His fathers will stated, "I give and bequest unto my son Armband Kimbrough the place whereon I now live called ShallowFord together with two improvements of land adjoining the above said tract to him and his heirs forever." Ormond and his half-brother, John were the only two children of Marmaduke to inherit land from their father. Ormond's was the "homeplace", and on the land he inherited is located the Kimbrough Family Cemetery. According to a letter written by Dr. M. D. Kimbrough, grandson of George, from Mockville North Carolina on January 24, 1901, "your gr. grandfather was named Ormond and lived on the east side on the Yadkin River in site of the Ford. His farm your grandmother and family sold to Col R. C. Puryear and now owned mostly by his heirs and is located on it the Kimbrough grave yard as it is known." This information is verified by another descendant interested in genealogy, Rev. M. K. Thornton. He wrote on June 28, 1907, "...Ormond Kimbrough settled on the Yadkin River in Surry county, North Carolina about the year 1800, married Elizabeth Davie of Surry or Stokes County. From this marriage three children were born; one son Marmaduke and two daughters, Sarah and Mary. After the death of his first wife he married Millie Patillo. They had two children. One died in infancy and the second a son George Henry." Marriage bond No. 000145757, County of Surry, State of North Carolina was issued Ormond and Elizabeth Davie on October 13, 1795. M. D. Kimbrough was the bondsman. Elizabeth died on April 29, 1802, after having 3 children. Ormond soon remarried Millie Patillo. Millie and Ormond lost either 1 or 2 children in infancy, then had a son, born in 1806. At this time there is only one indication as to the date of death of Ormond. It is a bill of sale dated January 1, 1819 signed by George Kimbrough and Peter Clingerman as Administrators of the estate of Armon Kimbrough (sic). According to this document a Negro man, named Grand Peter, was sold at public auction to Benjamin Howard for $456 as part of the estate settlement. This would indicate Ormond died in about 1818. His burial place is not certain, but is probably the Kimbrough Family Cemetery in present Forsyth County. It is located on high ground overlooking the Yadkin River and the Shallowford, on land owned first by Marmaduke, Sr. and passed to his son Ormond in his will.

From Mary Sue's Thorne's notes, he was a Captain. He may have received a promotion that is not accounted for in the HOS. It is said that he commanded a division and was wounded in the 2nd Battle of Manassas. His company did participate in that battle, again according to HOS, so that must be where he lost his arm.

Also from Mary Sue Thorne's notes:

William Taylor Thorne, a son of Edwin, married Mary Turner and they had 13 children. He was a Captain during the Civil War and commanded a Division at the 2nd Battle of Mannassas. He lost his right arm in the war. My Father, Lee, said William was Supt. of the Spartanburg County Home, commonly called "The Poor House" and when Lee was in his teens, he had many experiences of laying out (preparing for burial) and making wooden coffins. William was a Commissioner of Spartanburg County for twenty years and had only one vote cast against him in all that time. A Circuit Rider Pastor came by horseback to Arrowwood Church once a month to preach and on most every visit for twenty years, this Preacher spent Saturday night and had Sunday dinner with William and his family. William was a highly respected citizen and was called "Capt'n Thorne". He died in 1916 at age 86. I remember seeing many Civil War veterans at his funeral, who were weeping openly. As dozens of these Veterans filed by the casket, they had many complimentary remarks to offer. William had slaves, two of whom remained after the war as they had no place to go, a man and a woman. The man "Hen"came from Africa and told how the slave traders came with brightly colored beads and trinkets to lure the people to the boats, where they were secured in the holds. William's fireplace in the kitchen was wide enough to burn whole rails from old fences. Lee said Hen would build a fire on each end and then sit in the middle with the fire burning toward him. Captain William was often called upon for help when there was trouble in the homes of the Veterans as he had been the commanding officer of most of them.
