TIMELINE

1982

Autumn -- Pseudo Echo is born when singer-guitarist Brian Canham and bassist Pierre Pierre (who have played in bands together for five years) meet keyboard player Tony Lugton, previously of James Freud's Radio Stars. The band take their name from a synthesizer manual - one of the sounds the machine can produce is called a "Pseudo Echo Machine".
Mid-'82 - mid-'83 -- Supporting Melbourne band An Affair gets them noticed. They sign on with an agency called Nucleus and get support gigs for Siouxsie and the Banshees and Psychedelic Furs.

June -- Ian "Molly" Meldrum sees them in Melbourne and takes the unprecedented step of booking them for Countdown (iconic Australian music TV program) even though they don't have a record out. They appear on the show miming to a demo of 'Listening'.
July -- The drum machine breaks down once too often and, after seeing him in The Asthmatics, the bands asks Anthony Argiro to join them.
September -- A recording contract is finally signed with EMI. October -- They record 'Listening' as their first single.
November -- 'Listening' is a runaway success, racing up the charts and winding up at number 3.

1984

Early part of year -- 'Autumnal Park' is recorded with John Punter (who has worked with the likes of Roxy Music and Japan) producing. March -- The second single, 'A Beat For You', is released and is also a top ten success.

Mid-year

January -- The Pseuds work with Midge Ure of Ultravox as well as lots of other music biz people on the East African Tragedy (EAT) Appeal, involving a concert and telethon, for which James and Brian write a song called 'Can We Get Together'. It is planned to get all the people who performed it at the concert together to record the song, but this project is eventually shelved.
February/March -- Record 'Living In A Dream' in Sydney with plans to release it as a single, but this too is shelved. A jazz version of the song from this session is later used as a B-side.
May -- The band sign on with manager Glenn Wheatley, joining Real Life and John Farnham under his wing.
June -- Recording of new album starts at Platinum Studios in Melbourne with US producer Mark Berry at the helm. September -- First single off new disc 'Don't Go' is released, again going top ten. Pseudo Echo start a five-week tour of Australia supporting Uncanny X-Men.
October -- New album 'Love An Adventure' released. Anthony Argiro is feeling the pressure and it is decided he will move on. Ready to step into the breach is James's brother Vince, a drummer with a vastly different style which changes the band's live sound.
November -- On the road touring the new LP through summer.
December -- Title track released as the second single off the album.

1986

January -- 'Love An Adventure' is yet another top ten hit. Album goes platinum. Band perform at 'Priority One' concert. April -- Third single 'Living In A Dream' released. Over several months negotiations are being carried out with overseas record labels; a deal is finally hammered out with RCA.
September -- Last single from 'Love An Adventure' album released, a double A-side with 'Try' and 'Lonely Without You'.
October
-- Brian goes to New York for five weeks to be involved in preparing 'Love An Adventure' for release in the US; it is to include revamped versions of three tracks off the first album.
November -- As recording of a new album gets pushed further and further down the track it is decided that a fill-in single is needed. The band succumbs to pressure from friends and fans to record their version of 'Funky Town', which they have been playing live as an encore for some time. The song is released and becomes a smash hit, reaching the number 1 chart position nationally and staying there for 12 weeks.

1987

January -- 'Love An Adventure' is released in the US.
April/May -- Pseudo Echo do their first overseas tour in the US; 'Living In A Dream' has created some interest and 'Funky Town' is racing up the charts there.
May -- 'Long Plays 83-87' is released at home to keep the local fans happy.
June -- Touring New Zealand as 'Funky Town' goes top ten in the US.
July -- Pick up "Most Popular Band" and "Most Popular Male Performer" (Brian) awards at Countdown Music Awards.
August -- Promotional visit to England including appearance on Top of the Pops (and setting off the alarms at Kensington Palace!).
September -- Lightning tour round Australia with Geisha.
October -- OS again, this time to Europe and Scandinavia, then to Japan to compete in the Yamaha World Popular Song Festival with a new song called 'Take On The World'. They up and win the darn thing!

1988

January -- At last they are back in the studio, this time at Metropolis in Melbourne with Julian Mendelsohn, who is co-producing with Brian. Ten weeks later 'Race' is finished.
February thru November -- The album spends months going backwards and forwards between Australia and the US being remixed and mucked around with until everyone is satisfied (although the band aren't entirely happy with the end result).
November -- The first single 'Fooled Again' is released. It does not sound like the Pseudo Echo of old, and the response is lukewarm; radio doesn't seem interested.

1989

February -- 'Race' album released, and Pseuds back on the road to promote it. It is markedly different from earlier material, the long gap between releases showing a change in sound from pure pop to heavier rock. Second single 'Over Tomorrow' follows.
July -- Pseudo Echo and Glenn Wheatley part ways. Band continuing to slog it out on the road; 'Race' still not doing very well. Third single double A-side 'Eye Of The Storm' and 'Don't You Forget'.
November -- The band take stock of the situation and decide enough is enough.

December 3 -- Melbourne newspaper reports that the band has split up. I cry.

1997
December 31 -- Pseudo Echo play what turns out to be the first of many reunion shows with original members Brian and Pierre, together with Chocolate Starfish drummer Darren Danielson and Badloves keyboardist Tony Featherstone. The New Year's Eve show at Sydney's Retro Club is such a blast that several shows in Melbourne are soon on the cards.

1998
February -- The band plays two shows in Melbourne which are a huge success, and it is soon obvious that more dates will be inevitable! The rest of the year is spent with Brian and Darren alternating between their band Brill and Pseudo shows; by the end of the year the interest in PE is not showing any signs of waning.

1999

February -- The first new Pseudo Echo song in a decade, '1985', is introduced into the live set, along with some new stage outfits - all silver!
April -- A demo CD is released to online fans with '1985' and another new song 'The Future'. Despite being fairly costly due to its independent production, the run of 80 copies is sold out quickly.
May -- PE is the house band on Melbourne's AFL show "Live And Kicking". The following week they play a special gig at the Esplanade Hotel in St Kilda at which almost all the songs from 'Autumnal Park' plus all the hit singles are recorded for a planned live CD release.
November -- Pseudo Echo's first new release since 1989, a CD of six remixes of 'Funkytown', hits the streets.

2000

February -- Pseudo Echo tours Australia with Culture Club and the Village People.
March thru July -- Still gigging regularly especially in Melbourne, while waiting for record company problems to sort themselves out.
August -- Long-awaited release of double CD "Teleporter" on Colossal Records! This tiny record company isn't able to promote it properly and sales are disappointing, but the fans (of which there are still many all over the world) are happy!

2001 and beyond -- Who knows! Gigs are still popping up here and there, so here's hoping for many more to come.
