A note of explanation: we marched an exhibition at Buhler H.S. near the end of the 1997 season. Tim & Sid were busy after school, so for the first time all season, they left it up to the drum line to load and check their own equipment for the performance. (The drum solo required a large amount of extra equipment that year - including 8 snares, 8 quads, 8 floor toms, 6 bass drums concert bass, gong, timpani, mallet percussion... well, you get the idea.) Needless to say we arrived without a few essentials. Tim went back to Hutch while Sid stalled as long as possible. As we were taking the field we could see the equipment van turning on to the street. As things turned out several Buhler band members came to Tim's rescue and dragged everything to the field during the opener, just in time for drum solo. Thanks guys! Lynette penned this list (with apologies to Mr. Letterman) and presented it to Sid at the end of the year. 10. Have each band member take itsy-bitsy tiny steps to the field. 9. Tune EACH instrument three times. 8. Check to make sure everyone's fly is up. 7. Polish all the brass instruments before taking the field - also oil the valves. 6. Have the Drum Majors do a ten minute salute, complete with splits and a round-off. 5. Carry the small amount of percussion equipment that's actually there to the field, one piece at a time. Then- 4. Proceed to put new heads on all the drums. 3. Once on the field, warm-up with the entire circle of fifths - twice. 2. Play all the minor scales in all three forms. 1. Play the warm-up chorale twice at half tempo, then play it retrograde and in inversion. |
