About Me by Lama Surya Das

Born Jeffrey Miller in New York in 1950, graduated Phi Beta Kappa from SUNY Buffalo
in 1971 with a degree in Creative Education. Between 1971 and 1976, I traveled
throughout India and Nepal studying with various spiritual teachers. The Hindu teacher,
Maharaj-ji (Neem Karoli Baba) gave me the name Surya Das. I lived and practiced in
Tibetan monasteries under the guidance of Venerable Lama Thubten Yeshe, Venerable
Kalu Rinpoche and His Holiness Gyalwa Karmapa. Lived in Kyoto, Japan in 1973-74,
teaching English and studying Zen & haiku. I lived in Woodstock, NY 1977-80,
establishing Karmapa's monastery, Karma Triyana Dharma Chakra. Participated in
dozens of Vipassana courses in the 1970's with S. N. Goenka, A. Munindra, and other
Theravadin teachers. Was a founding board member of the world health service
organization, SEVA Foundation.

In 1980, joined the first Nyingmapa retreat center in Dordogne, France where I
completed two traditional three and a half year retreats under the guidance of Dudjom
Rinpoche and Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, with Tulku Pema Wangyal and Nyoshul Khenpo
Rinpoche. During this time, I became a lama in the Non-Sectarian Practice Lineage of
Tibetan Buddhism.

I currently teach meditation retreats and workshops in Dzogchen, "the Innate Great
Perfection", as well as Vajrayana and Mahayana Buddhism. Each year, I conduct two
dozen retreats in ten different countries.

I am the founder of the Dzogchen Foundation, based in Cambridge, MA. I am the author
of "The Snow Lion's Turquoise Mane: Wisdom Tales from Tibet"; author of "The Facts of
Life From a Buddhist Perspective"; and coauthor (with Nyoshul Khenpo Rinpoche) of
"The Natural Great Perfection: Spontaneous Songs and Dzogchen Teachings". They can
be ordered from the Dzogchen Foundation, or from your bookstore. My book, "Awakening
the Buddha Within" (Broadway Books) has been very well-received, and I am currently
finishing a book, "Awakening to the Sacred: Creating a Spiritual Life from Scratch," to be
released in Spring, 1999.

A member of the International Padmakara Translation Committee, I have been active
in translating, editing and publishing Buddhist books and scriptures for many years. I
also publish poetry, articles and essays. I am the organizer of the Western Buddhist
Teachers Network and its Teacher's Conferences with the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala, India.

The Heart Sutra and Gaté Mantra

Natural Perfection

Recorded live before an enraptured audience, Lama Surya Das enlightens
