The main character, Gino Bonadio, is a 35 year-old Italian-American inventor. Like most Americans, he really doesn't know much about his family history, but as an inventor, this doesn't stop him from making it up! The rest of the family gets upset, and living or dead, can interrupt him at any time. He and his two older sisters, Ro, 56 and Jo, 58, have a 76 year-old
mother with dementia. The split-generation siblings have been sharing her care, but now Ro
and Jo want to put her in a nursing home. Gino, an inventor into reuse and recycling,
adamantly disagrees. He moves back to his mother's house and changes the locks: stealing
his Ma. Now he has to worry about his sisters' revenge. |
Stealing Mama spans several generations and has the poetry and feel of a Merchant-Ivory production. The film can be realistically produced for a low budget by dividing the film into two works: * The Italian sections of the film can be produced as a half-hour short titled, "Mama"
* This version will purchase the footage from the short film and incorporate it into the finished product. * The film will be shot on Super 16mm. |

* Stealing Mama contains great lead roles which will attract recognizable actors, who will provide superior performances for theatre and video release.* Stealing Mama is a character-driven comedy without violence or profanity that will appeal to all ages.* Stealing Mama has a built-in and eager Italian American audience, especially those who want an alternative to racially biased Mafia films.* Stealing Mama, an immigrant story about becoming American, speaks across cultures in this immigrant nation. This was witnessed at the public reading where the work was enthusiastically received by a cross-cultural audience.* Stealing Mama has an international appeal because it is an American comedy and because of it's magic realism style. Transformational 'magic realism' had its origins in Latin America and Africa, and is very popular in Europe. The film will also cast Italian Actors for the Italian sections and was recently translated into Italian to facilitate Italian sponsorship.* Stealing Mama addresses the problems of aging parents and dementia, which are critical to the huge populations of baby-boomers in the Western world.* Stealing Mama is an art film, luscious, historic, romantic, honest and fun. |
