Vigil Recalls Woman Missing for 26 years

Hayward ---
At a candlelight vigil Saturday night, Victoria Eastin-Cordova looked sadly at the back lot of a coin-operated car wash on Mission Boulevard and wondered what happened to her sister, Christine Eastin, 26 years ago.
"When you don't know what happened, you think of a hundred thousand scenarios of what could have happened that drive you up the wall," said the 52-year old woman.
Eastin-Cordova's sister disappeared Jan 18, 1971, at the 25400 Mission Blvd. car wash after she washed a friend's car she had borrowed.
Eastin borrowed the car to go shopping with friend Sandy McBride. The expedition ended with Eastin taking her friend home and driving the '69 Ford Maverick to the self-operated car wash.
That's where it was found later but "Christy" Eastin was nowhere to be seen. The 19-year-old who had lived her entire life in Hayward has been missing ever since.
"It's unreal. There's no closure for the family and friends." McBride said Saturday night at the vigil that was attended by 14 others.
David Legro, the Hayward policeman who took the report on the scene in 1971, was among those who attended.
"This has bothered me for 26 years," said Legro, now a sergeant with the Sonoma County Sheriff's office.
He said he was glad to see that the case, the longest missing persons case in Hayward, was reopened three years ago under Detective Frank Daley.
Eastin-Cordova is the last of her family after her mother died 10 years ago at age 66.
Eastin-Cordova said Christy's disappearance aged her mother 20 years. "She could have looked 86 instead of 66," she said.
Hayward Crimestoppers have placed a $1,000 reward toward its resolution. Anyone with information should call Daley at (510) 293-7066.
