"This album was mastered in analog utilizing the 20-Bit K2 Super Coding System. Developed by JVC, the 20-Bit [system] integrates three important digital audio functions:
- 1. The JVC 20-Bit 128-times over-sampling high resolution analog to digital converter
- 2. The JVC K2 Super Coding resolves the high resolution 20-Bit signal to the 16-bit compact disc format while retaining the integrity of the low level information
- 3. The JVC K2 Interface effectively eliminates time base jitter in the digital data stream.
The end result is a compact disc of extraordinarily higher resolution than that of today's conventional compact discs. The [system] allows the listener to hear every subtle sonic nuance from the breathing of the musicians to the explosive crack of the snare drum. Enjoy!"

Note: The 1987 CD re-release placed both takes of 'Beautiful Love' one after the other as take 2 and Take 1. This 2000 CD re-release rearranges them as indicated above.
Program note (from the 1987 CD release):
“Although the originally-issued version of 'Beautiful Love' is designated as Take 2, and the alternate that follows it here is Take 1, this is not the usual case of a second attempt that immediately followed the first. On the contrary, it is a prime example of Evans's impatience and perfectionism. Early in this date, he played this number once; we both approved; and he moved on to something else. Much later (after having worked on seven other selections), he decided to try a second 'Beautiful Love,' which he later preferred. 'The Boy Next Door' was the tune that the pianist set aside as most expendable when we found we had more material than would comfortably fit on the album. It was later included on the Milestone 'twofer' Spring Leaves (M-47034), and both of these bonus selections are in the boxed set Bill Evans: The Complete Riverside Recordings (R-018), but this Compact Disc marks their first inclusion with the original album.” Initialed: --O.K. (1987)
Program note (from back of red cardboard sleeve for jewel case):
"The second album by the original Bill Evans group was recorded after the pianist, bassist Scott LaFaro, and drummer Paul Motian had spent a year working together and honing the telepathy that established a new standard for trio interaction. featuring intimate readings of several standards, plus three compositions from the jazz world that became synonymous with the trio's sounds, and with ample space for LaFaro's virtuosity to shine, the album was cited by Evans years later as among his own favorite recordings. With an excellent performance of 'The Boy Next Door' (omitted from the original release for lack of space) and an alternate take of 'Beautiful Love,' this edition of Explorations contains all of the music preserved by one of jazz's seminal bands on its final visit to a recording studio."

The original 1961 recording was produced by Orrin Keepnews and engineered by David Jones of Riverside Records. This 2002 analog-to-digital re-mastering, utilizing the 20-bit K2 Super Coding System, was accomplished by Tamaki Beck of FLAIR (JVC Aoyama Studios, Tokyo) with tape research by Stuart Kremsky, CD assembly by Joe Tarantino, production coordination by Bill Belmont, and design by Yoko Nakamura (program booklet, verso title page). Musical selections are arranged in chronological order of their performance. My comments on this extraordinary re-mastering and reissue:
Listeners familiar with every audible nook and cranny of the original Bill Evans Riverside LPs Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz For Debby, which recordings comprised most of the music made that magical Sunday in New York in early summer 1961, were amazed later in the 1970s with the re-issue of these recordings along with previously un-released takes. In the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s, with the advent of the CD, increased sonority and clarity were noticeable. The present compilation continues in this tradition, revealing to the listener the following new information about this seminal recording:
- For the first time we hear an introduction (presumably by producer Orrin Keepnews) of the musicians and the announcement that all is being recorded.
- For the first time, we hear the first take of LaFaro’s ‘Gloria’s Step’, the first selection of the first afternoon set, previously un-issued because of the electrical power failure glitch which precluded it from erstwhile releases.
- At the end of the first set we are privileged to listen to Evans’ announcement of an intermission followed by discussion of the power failure.
- At the beginning of the second evening set, we hear the musicians discuss the music they are about to perform.
- In addition to the subtlety of Motian’s brushwork and LaFaro’s strings clacking at times on his instrument’s fingerboard, advances in recording technology also amplify the ambient background chatter of the Village Vanguard’s loquacious customers and the clinking of glassware reminding us this was but another work day for the Bill Evans Trio.
- Both takes of LaFaro’s ‘Jade Visions’ were performed back to back at the end of the third and final evening set, and of this magnificent recording session.
- At the end of the last set we are permitted to eavesdrop on the wrap-up of this all-day recording session, the first (and what turned out to be the only) “live” recording session of the first Bill Evans trio, with a voice (Orrin Keepnews?) saying to Evans, “Hey, ah, Bill, he’s [the recording engineer] got a little tape left. Play something else . . . about 30 seconds . . .”, and with Evans responding by playing what to my ear sounds like a ten-second Chaplinesque musical allusion amidst laughter which fades to silence.
Comments from Japan's Kohji 'Shaolin' MATSUBAYASHI, one of the keepers of the Jazz Discography Project < www.jazzdisco.org > (April 2004)
Dear Chuck Ralston-san
Hi, I've read your great Scott LaFaro web site. As you may already know, this great 3-CD boxed set (Victor Japan VICJ-60951/3) DOES include previously un-released materials. "Gloria's Step (take 1)", which was known as the very first tune recorded on this session unfortunately suffered an accidental power failure. This take first appears on this . . . set (with a few seconds' [of] silence due to a power failure. "... a few final bars...", the last recording of the entire session, after "Jade Visions (take 2)", is also included. It is just a dozen seconds of Bill Evans' unaccompanied piano. The most remarkable aspect of this set, without a doubt, is that all materials are unedited, including audience chatter as well as the trio's conversations and even Orrin Keepnews' whispering between every tune. This means that this set was mastered directly from unedited master tapes. With this set, we can finally share a "virtual experience" of the entire session -- the most famous and legendary recording of June 25, 1961, at the Village Vanguard by Evans, LaFaro, and Motian.

"Judging by the number of sessions it took to complete, the original Latinsville! album seems to have been a rather difficult project. Now we get a better sense of the album's gestation with the inclusion of five tracks recorded at a pair of previously unknown sessions. A quintet gathered at Contemporary's studios over two days in December 1958, to begin work on Feldman's second album for the label. Producer Les Koenig got as far as assembling an album side before a decision was evidently made to abandon the material and start over with an explicitly Latin feeling. A search of our vaults for bonus material for this reissue yielded nothing usable from the 1959 sessions, but it did uncover that assembled reel, along with the December session tapes. The tape boxes themselves divulged dates, song titles and engineering credits. Contemporary's original ledger books supplied the final part of the puzzle by revealing the names of the musicians who were paid for the dates." -- Stuart Kremsky, tape vault archivist (from the program booklet)
My notes:
'Ponciana' (#13) -- fast tempo with solid walking bass and a crisp LaFaro solo. Nick Martinis a sharp, excellent drummer. Rosolino is impeccable.
Pancho' (#14) -- medium swing tempo with Rosolino and Benton playing clear and thoughtful melody lines, and Feldman full comping support.
'The Breeze and I' (#15) -- at a fast, fast 'Salt Peanuts' tempo.
'Bullues Bullose' (#16) -- bouncing blues with some nice turn backs in LaFaro's bass line and crisp drum breaks by Martinis with a follow-on solo by Scotty.
'Lady of Spain' (#17) -- 6/8 'waltz' tempo with an intro by Feldman with LaFaro playing arco then switching to a walking bass line, Then solos by Benton, Feldman piano, Feldman vibes, and LaFaro, then both horns in unison.

Note: program notes to this CD introduce conflicting information about the drummer's identity. The CD's liner notes report that "according to Beverly Kelly it was Johnny Whited, Pat Moran's regular drummer." I assume this is based on conversation between producer Jordi Pujol and Ms. Kelly. Ms. Patti Moran McCoy, however, remembers Gene Gammage as the drummer at the recording sessions that resulted in these two LPs and this CD.
