Like the Disneyland Railroad, the Mark Twain is a nice attraction for guests visiting Disneyland for the first time. However, it's not something you can ride every time you go to the park.

free association

. . . The Mark Twain might be too slow and leisurely for many guests' tastes and nothing particularly "exciting" happens on its loop around Tom Sawyer's Island. However, its a great place to go to relax and see Frontierland's "wilderness," much of which can only be seen from its decks. . .

pointless trivia

  • Actress Irene Dunne christened the riverboat on live television Opening Day with a bottle containing water collected from several American rivers. Incidentally, Mrs. Dunne, whose father inspected steamboats, had a starring role in the famous Hollywood musical, Show Boat, (1936). (Walt Disney Treasures - Disneyland USA)
  • The hull of the riverboat was built in San Pedro, California, many of the interior details (doors, posts, etc.) in Burbank, and most of the woodwork at the Disneyland mill shop. (The E-Ticket, Spring 1993).
  • Steam from the boiler room is not emitted through the big smokestacks in front; it escapes through smaller "vent stacks" aft of the boat. (Ibid)
  • TEST: What is the name of the harbor that the Mark Twain was built in and now docks the Columbia? Answer Below
Last Updated: 22 June 2003

Answer: "Fowler's Harbor," named after Admiral Joe Fowler who oversaw the construction of Disneyland (Ibid)
