I read about the Slater's homecoming a few years ago in the Newark (NJ) Star-Ledger. It made me very happy to find out that one of these Cannon-class DE's had survived and was coming home. My dad had served on one of these while in the reserves in the '50 s, USS Snyder DE-745. My dad died in '60 at the age of 25 from heart disease. I was 15 months old at the time, so what little I know of him are the stories my mother has told me of him, including his time aboard the Snyder. I still have a rather worn old evell model kit which Dad assembled as DE-745. I'd sure love to get back up north one of these days and come aboard for a look around! I know it's unlikely, but if anyone remembers my dad, Radioman 1st cl John R. Andrews, I'd love to hear from them. He wa a tall man, over 6"-4", and had a devil of a time with the low overhead and tight hatchways!

greetings... very nice work in restoring ship, as well as a excellent web site. i've seen the ship in nyc and am so much more impressed with both the work you are doing in albany and the overall organization, people on board, atmosphere, etc.. personal preference for restoratation...i think you all should try and bring the ship back to WW2, atlantic theatre appearance... negative, sort of...a week before my trip to albany i hit the ny state - into albany web sites, couldn't find anything on the slater, and even e-mailed them a question regarding the slater, i.e. where it was?, which got no reply.

My Dad was on the USS Edward C. Daly, DE-17, during WWII. He has joined the DESA and we are going to their reunion in Jacksonville, FL, in April 1998. I served on the USS Jack Miller DE 410. I am a plank owner. I have a URL on the Miller. I am looking for former shipmates, so far I have found two(2).The Jack Miller was in the pacific during WWII. She was at Okinawa on April 1, 1945. You guys are doing a wonderful job of restoring the SALTER,so future generations can visit the ships of the past. They dont look anyway like the ships of the NAVY of today. I have bee aboard the USS STEWART in Galveston,Texas. I think this is about the only DE that was still round before the SALTER. The Stewart in on land and has a big opening on the side for an entrance. This takes away from the orginal design. Gentlemen, Bravo! Thanks to you wonderful guys we can see history come alive. My uncle, Donald Randall, (God rest his soul) served on a sister, DE 747, the U.S.S. Bright. The Bright was at Okinawa on May 13, 1945 when it was hit by a Japanese plane (a Kamikaze, according to my uncle). Although the Bright was built on the other coast (Western Pipe & Steel, San Pedro), it must have been similar to the Slater in many ways. I'm currently trying to determine what configuration the Bright was in at the time of the attack including her camouf age. I'd sincerely appreciate hearing from anyone who has any information about the U.S.S. Bright. Thanks to you, I'm looking forward to seeing the Slater (and the Bright!).

STATUS OF SLATER 12/21/97 USS Slater is in Albany and will be open for visitors in early April,1998. Tim Rizzuto, who is mainly responsible for restoration of USS Kidd in Baton Rouge, is in charge. It is planned to send buses to Albany from Springfield, Mass. during the August, 1999 DESA Convention. An Albany Chapter of DESA will be formed on 2/8/98 in Albany. A visit to Slater and participation in the DE Museum opening will take place on that day. E-Mail me for details. Glad to hear that the Slater now has a permanent home. In April of 1997 our Reunion Group tried to visit the Slater alongside the Intrepid - but a german movie was being filmed and the ship was not open for inspection - much to our sorrow. Fifty of us had looked forward to touring the ship. Will look forward to visiting the Slater in Albany - hopefully with our reunion crew.

USS Slater will arrive at the Port of Albany, NY at noon on Sunday, October 26. Slater will remain at this location until its permanent berth at Corning Preserve is completed in Spring, 1998. At a press conference held on 10/9/97, the Mayor of Albany an ounced approval of 25 million dollars of aid for development of the Albany waterfront, of which will be the initial central attraction. Plans call for improvement of the complex including an aquarium, museum, restaurant and other major facilities. Additioanl info will e available through DESA and DEHF publications. Thanks to the New York volunteers who did so much to bring Slater to its current state. Their efforts will not be forgotten.

Working in downtown Albany and living nearby, I have heard the news about the coming of the USS Slater. Being a former sailor I welcome the Slater to Albany. Albany is a fantastic place for the old girl. It is getting a berth at what is called The Corning Preserve, a park on the Hudson River. It is a top notch berth! It is a boat house for dozens of rowing clubs, a beautiful picnic park, a long bike trail, and a festival area. Even better, the popularity of the park will feed the museum which will help ring the revenue that will be needed to keep the Slater up. These optimum condtions did not exhist in West Manhattan. We welcome the Slater in open arms.
