Thanks to Mark Bennett from Alvaston in Derby, who has sent in details of the very popular Adrian Allen.

Adrian's publicity shot for Century - bad hair day?

Profile: Adrian Allen: Born in Sunderland sometime a while ago, he was brought up with the sound of the crowd at Sunderland AFC's old football stadium Roker Park, to a noise called 'The Roker Roar'.  But you wouldn't want to roar directly at Adrian - he's graded as a 7th Kyu in Ninjutsu and is a 2nd degree practitioner in the art of reiki.  Conpare this then with musical interests - as well as being a huge fan of Motorhead and Led Zeppelin, he's also a classically trained cellist.  If your car ever goes wrong, and you're his neck of the woods, he's actually a motor mechanic by trade, and in his spare time, taxes the old brain matter by studying philosophy.   His favourite quote from philosophy comes from Lao Tzu - this being 'If you realise that all things change, there is nothing you will try to hold on to.'

A family man, he considers himself good at understanding but also as a believer in destiny.  The one thing that scares him is being lonely (so he picks the solitary confinement of a radio studio as a job?  Ed) but he is who he is - Adrian Allen - and doesn't try to be anyone else.  Although if able to get the things he wants, some of those things would be wisdom, knowledge and experience.

Mark writes:. 'Another presenter to inherit the late night phone in show from Century 106 in the East Midlands.  He also conducted a lunch time phone-in between 1300 and 1400. The show thrived on drama and controversy and one rumour suggested that the more complaints the shows illicited meant that people were listening.

Adrian continued with the ‘spades a spade’ theme and generally didn’t mince words on any issue, commendably he never swore (on air anyway!)   It is believed that a major clash of personality with a caller led to Adrian having to leave the station.

A couple of his more notable phrases have been ‘Scum sucking pond life’ to describe criminals and others disliked and ‘shandy drinking southerners’ which is an opinion on people south of somewhere (!)

As well as Century 106 Adrian presented on both the Manchester (105.4FM) and Newcastle (100.7 and 101.8) arms of the empire.  Added to this he has been at the following – Aire FM, BRMB, Buzz FM, City Radio, Hallam FM, Liberty Radio, BBC Newcastle, Rock FM, TFM and Wear FM.'

AIRCHECK continues: From October 2000, Adrian became the late-night talk show host at Real Radio based in South Wales which attracted all kinds of attention.  But by the April of 2002, his contract had not been renewed.  He'd been at the station since it launched and gained a loyal following carried over from his work at East Midlands regional station Centry 106.  The official line from Real Radio was that his contract had come to and end and they decided simply not to renew it.   Ironically buses in the area were still displaying adverts for the show, advertising The Adrian Allen Late Show from 10 - 1, until they pull the plug - now they have...

Whereabouts: Although he has, in the past, been heard stating he considered BBC Radio to be bad and insular, he's now presenting the late show weekdays from 22:00-01:00 on 95 FM BBC Radio Cleveland.
