This compact region in south-west Khabarovsky Province is now politically independent from the Province; however, the issue still seems to incite bitter feelings in Khabarovsk. Only 4% of the population is Jewish. The JAO's economy is mostly agricultural, but Birobidzhan is the Russian Far East's largest center of light industry. Border trade with China is increasing.
