Basic Infrastructure of Yakutia (Sakha) Republic
Sakha, five times the size of Texas, has rudimentary infrastructure. Rivers are
navigable five months of the year, and serve as roadways when frozen. Summer
shipping on the 4,400 km (2,728 miles) long Lena River and on other rivers is
still the chief method of transporting about 2 million tons of oil products and
millions of other goods that come to it from other parts of Russia annually.
Approximately one-third of the Amur-Yakutsk Mainline railway is completed (work
began in 1985), but lack of funds is delaying progress.
