Economy and Industry of Yakutia (Sakha) Republic
Before the current industrial slowdown Sakha's industry was one of the fastest
growing in the Russian Far East. The Republic's economy is dominated by mining
(almost 2/3 of industrial output). Sakha is Russia's principal producer of
diamonds, gold, and tin.
As the most accessible gold and diamond deposits have been exhausted, mining
costs are now increasing. Nevertheless, Yakutia produces virtually 100% of
Russia's rough diamonds and almost a quarter of Rusia's gold. Tin mining is
important and has good prospects. Yakutia has the right to keep 20% of diamonds
and 11.5% of all gold mined in its territory.
After mining, next in importance are energy fuels (more than 15% of total
industrial output). In natural gas production Yakutia is second to Sakhalin.
Two large new plants (oil processing and natural gas liquidification) recently
completed in Yakutia will boost its potential further. Other important economic
sectors are construction materials, logging, and food processing. Sakha also
provides approximately one fifth of Russia's fur output.
Coal accounts for more than 90% of total exports with Japan being the largest
trading partner.
