Natural Resources of Yakutia (Sakha) Republic

Diamonds are Sakha's most valuable natural resources. New agreements give Sakha the right to export on its own (not via Moscow) a percentage of its diamond output. Sakha recently started a diamond exchange. Explored reserves of coal are 4.4 billion tons, of which two-thirds is high quality Neryungri coking coal. In Sakha's one iron-ore deposit located in the Republic's southwest, expected reserves exceed 2.5 billion tons (80% of Russian Far East's total).

Sakha also holds the Russian Far East's sole known phosphate deposit (130 million tons of apatite ores, containing 6.7% P2O5). Natural gas reserves are estimated at 3 trillion cubic meters, and there are 130 million tons of commercial oil reserves. Other important resources include tin, gold (reserves substantially depleted), polymetal ores, antimony, bismuth, tungsten, mercury, and furs. Timber reserves (9 billion cubic meters) are huge, but of low quality.
