When my boys were young my hobbies were: sewing, crocheting, knitting, reading, baking, and etc. As they grew my hobbies gradually became what Patrick and Stephen were involved in, for instance they attended a Co-operative Preschool where the mothers were asked to work once or twice a month with the class, assisting with snacks, clean-up, game time, and etc. Then when they attended elementary school, I volunteered in their classrooms and in the school library. I also volunteered as an Awana Sparks Leader during the boys grade school years. In 1990 I became a 4-H C0-Cat Project Leader for the boys 4-H Club, taking turns with another Leader in presenting the information to share with the members at project meetings. 4-H has become a big part of our lives with the boys and ourselves involved in many aspects of 4-H.
In 1991 I became a non-paid, Volunteer, 4-H Cat Assistant Superintendent for our County Fair; my jobs were to prepare and present Knowledge Bowl Questions, Create Cat ID Contest, prepare questions fitting and showing, find and confirm judges for Fair, and assist with set-up for Type Judging. I was Cat Leader Committee Secretary for two years, 1992-1994. Stephen and I purchased his first purebred cat in 1992, after choosing our breed very carefully. Stephen and I are allergic to cats so we had to hold the cats of the breed we were considering and see how we reacted. We discovered we were less allergic to short coated Balinese so Stephen's very first cat, Ramius, is very spoiled and sleeps in Stephen's room. Ramius is the light colored, short coated Balinese that you can see in the back left on our Personal Glimpse Page. We have since gone on to breed the long coated Balinese/Javanese and now are working with Oriental Shorthairs as well. In 1993, I ran the Knowledge Bowl at State Fair. In 1994-1995, I was Cat Leader Committee Vice Chairman. (Remember all this 4-H work is as a Volunteer!) Then came Junior High and I volunteered as a JV Awana Leader for two years, 1993-1995 along with my 4-H Volunteer jobs.
Also in 1993 I became an Amateur Radio Operator, volunteering with Amateur Radio Emergency Services. ARES Volunteers assist in providing communications with our Amateur Radios for emergency situations. For example: we had a simulated earthquake drill in which I worked with our Engine 8 Firefighters to educate them on the role that ARES will take in an actual emergency. Michael became an Amateur Radio Operator in 1992 and we use our Radios to communicate with each other at County and State Fair as well and if we see an emergency along the way we are able to patch into 911 via our Radios. In 1995, I took on the Volunteer Position of Cat Purebred Rescue Secretary.

Stephen still likes working with our cats and goes to the cat shows with me occasionally to help with showing our cats.
