Players

Almost everybody is in the race for E-Com. Large companies like IBM have seperate divisions for E-Com. And there are smaller companies dedicated to E-Com solutions alone. This page gives a link to many of the companies that have an E-Com solution. I have tried to include all the companies that I know of, who work on E-Com. However, there are lots of small companies dedicated to E-Com that are doing splendid work - that I may not be aware of. If you are aware of something I am not, please dont hesitate to Mail Me

As the battle heats up, the teams are currently being formed - as of now, it seems to be

IBM, SUN, Netscape, MasterCard & Allies

Vs

HP, Microsoft, Verifone, VISA & Allies

# IBM - Need I say more ? IBM's CommercePOINT series of products, it's Data Bolt series of products makes it one of the leading players in this field. IBM has also released a tool for building E-Commerc applications.

# Sun - has come up with the Java Electronic Commerce Framework, with it's own implementations of SET, Mondex and other protocols in the form of Cassettes. These Cassettes can be installed along with JECF, and since the protocol is already implemented, companies can concentrate on the added features, GUI, back-end database connectivity, etc . Sun has also released it's implementation of cryptography algorithms which can be integrated with JDK  1.1.1 .

# Netscape Netscape is now planning to bundle SET software along with it's browser - communicator systems - and this will help Commerce on the Web largely.

# MasterCard :    Was one of the partners involved in proposing the SET protocol - for Credit Card transactions on the Internet. MasterCard recently took a 50% stake in Mondex, the company that has a well established base in Digital Cash. This is expected to make MasterCard a stronger player in Digital Economy, as well as help Mondex, coz y'see it always helps to have a RICH big brother.

 Vs

# Hewlett Packard : HP, after having taken over Verifone, stands to be a big player in this market.

# Microsoft : After a complete turn around from the stand that Internet is a Myth, MS is trying to consolidate it's position in the E-Commerce market - using it's goodwill(?) in the Desktop Market to consolidate it's position in the Networked enterprise. But as the saying goes, in the Internet - when there are no fences, where is the need for Gates  ?

# Verifone : Verifone has a strong base in Electronic Commerce - so much so that this strong base of Verifone in Electronic Commerce was one of the main reasons cited by HP at the time of takeover. Microsoft's merchant server also uses Verifone's implementation of the SET protocol.

# VISA : One of the partners in development of SET.

Non Aligned Movement ??

# CyberCash : The company is focused on providing Secure Financial Transactions Services over the Internet, including Secure Credit Card transactions, Electronic cheques, and micro transactions. It's solutions include :

# VeriSign : VeriSign Inc. is the world's leading Internet Certification Authority , the trusted third party that authenticates, issues and manages digital certificates on the Internet.VeriSign Digital IDs enable trusted electronic commerce by authenticating the individuals, organisations and content involved in an electronic transaction. VeriSign claims to have issued it's Digital IDs to more than 14,000 Web sites, 500,000 individuals and is delivering custom Digital IDs used for secure credit cards, brokerage account IDs and membership access to corporations worldwide.

# GTE CyberTrust :  GTE has been on the SET team right from the start, and has been an active author the SET specification. In fact, the principal source for the material in the certificate management and distribution parts of the SET specification comes from GTE. CyberTrust is among the largest certifying authorities in business, and has more than 15 years of CA experience for the U.S. government. GTE operates the largest public key certificate management system in the world with over two million public keys in circulation.

#Advanced Transactions Eletronic Commerce (ATEC): ATEC develops and provides technology-driven financial services, such as a merchant credit processing, on-line consumer financial services. It strives to become a de facto standard of monetary transactions over the Internet. The whole game plan is to get the customers and merchants to route their purchases through what ATEC terms the "broker". This way, they claim security is maintained. This is basically a banking company that has moved to specialize in Internet financing and banking -- probably the first to do so.

#Terisa Systems : Terisa Systems has been involved with the design of SET from the very start. It was awarded the contract by Visa and MasterCard to produce SETREF, the SET Reference Implementation, which is currently being distributed by both Visa and MasterCard. Apart from this, Terisa has it's own range of products related to Electronic Commerce.

#RSA :  The company that was formed with the RSA algorithm for public key cryptography, seems to have come a long way. They have their own SET toolkit implementation, and a host of other toolkits related to Internet Secutrity - from E-Mail, to digital ignatures. Check out their products page.
