I reported directly to V-P Thoms Hoffman, Esq.. I became redundant at the time of sale to BAT and terminated under satisfactory circumstances

DUTIES:

• Analyized coverage, litigated cases, bad faith claims, policies, treaties and business contracts for liablity to General Counsel and recommended course of action.
• Evaluated, selected and supervised outside insurance defense counsel.
• Visited, inspected and audited files and business practices of subsidiary out-of-state companies for actual/potential liability.
• In-service training of claim examiners at remote locations.
• Researched and advised the Lead Claim Examiners about difficult claims.
• Audited legal counsel's billings for consistency and accuracy
• Supervised 240+ active lawsuits representing $45 mm in claims in addition to Bad Faith liability
• Reviewed pleadings of high exposure cases for litigation quality standards and effectiveness.
• Drafted business contracts, agency agreements and re-wrote many policy forms and certificates for three subsidiaries.
• Negotiated and drafted settlement agreements for insurer defendant clients.
• Rendered coverage opinion on assigned litigated cases and questioned claims presented by the claims examiners.
• Advised Regional Management regarding statutory and regulatory questions by the underwriters.
• Pension analysis for internal employees.

Case Management Duties:

• Selected and assigned cases to outside retained defense counsel.
• Full litigation report on all new cases were sent to managment, including coverage opinion letter rendered independent of outside counsel, to managment.
• Outline discovery plan, priorities and schedule discovery with an express plan of defense strategy.
• Assess demeanor of potential witnesses and evaluate effect of anticipated testimony.
• Impose discipline on the conduct of the defense of the company and monitor or facilitate the outside counsel's progress implementing the defense strategy.
• Case management by objectives.
