This roster is derived directly from information contained in the Record of Service of Michigan Volunteers in the Civil War 1861-1865, Volume 24, otherwise known as the "Brown Books" (They were originally published during the tenure of Brig. Gen. Geo. H Brown, State Adjutant General, and also have brown covers). These books, 46 in all plus the index, were originally published around the turn of the century, but volumes 1-10 & 24 plus the index have recently been reprinted. The reprints are available from a variety sources including Morningside Books.
The information in the Brown Books was compiled from the records of the Michigan Adjutant General's Office, Michigan GAR posts, and the 80 National Cemeteries that then existed. Federal records were not used because the War Department declined to provide the requested assistance.
Although I find the Brown Books to be an invaluable resource, and a good starting point, they are far from infallible. The Brown Book indicates that 2054 men served in the 24th Michigan. When confusion over a soldiers name occurred the Brown Book listed both names, thus overstating the figure. My list is organized differently, and contains 2035 unique names. The Brown book also omits various details of an individual' service. I am compiling a comprehensive database for the regiment. As my research progresses, I expect the database to deviate slighly from the Brown Book as more detailed information is unearthed. Currently only the name, company, and alternate names are available for every soldier. Residence and Place of enlistment will be added shortly, with date of enlistment and age at enlistment to follow. The time-frame for these upgrades is unspecified. Meanwhile I am working on detailed narrative biographies of some the soldiers. Click on the underlined names to be taken to the biography page for that individual. Check my Coming Attractions page for more information on planned features.
Because of the size of the file, I have split the roster by company. This should bring the loading time down to acceptable levels. If you are interested in a tab-delimited file containing the information presented here, please contact the author at the address at the bottom of the page.
