Low Lifestyle
Shadowrun the Official Rule Book defines the Low Lifestyle as..."With this lifestyle, the character has an apartment, and nobody is likely to bother him much if he keeps the door bolted. meals are regular. The nutrisoy may not taste great, but at least it's hot. And power and water are available during their area's assigned rationing periods. When those of the low lifestyle travel, they ride the tube. Factory workers, petty crooks, and other folks stuck in a rut, just starting out, or kind of down on their luck tend to show up here." Cost: 1000 Nuyen per month.
The Unofficial definition of the Low Lifestyle is... This is still not the kind of life a runner wants to be stuck in. Sure he has an apartment and food on the table, but for the risks he takes to pay the bills it's just not worth it. The apartment is generally secure in itself, due to the locks on the doors and windows. The apartment building still sits in a poor neighborhood and is not a security conscious building.
This is the place to be for a person that wants to get a lot of jobs. Mr. Johnsons tend to frequent places the lower class hang out in. They are looking for the runners that are trying to make a go at it from this level. People at this level are just a couple steps from living in the gutters and they know it. The runs are generally for persons with aggressive natures that have simple planning abilities. Johnsons will give them a goal and send them on their way. Sometimes a Johnson will hire a group at this level just to keep him informed of other runners at this same level. Jobs are plenty and the pay is fair.
Entertainment at this level is restricted to perhaps the Trid. A character may be an avid radio listener or a reader. Entertainment is something that kills time. A character may be able to take in a night on the town every now and then, whether it's dining out, or a sporting event. It's a rare day indeed when this character has the nuyen to really party down.
This is the most likely lifestyle for runner to maintain to launch runs from. He is guaranteed to have an apartment or very small house standing by to be filled with his fellow runners or prisoners. Unlike the lower lifestyles, which may not guarantee a place to run to, this one will be there. It may not be a very secure place to defend if it's located, but at least it's there. A low lifestyle can also be secured enough to store Shadowrun Gear and vehicles. If a character is on the run he is probably quite safe hanging out here for a while, at least until the corps or the law can track his fake SIN or beat the information out of local informants.
With only a 1000 nuyen allocated to this characters life, there's not much he can do. He's guaranteed a tube pass and an occasional beer. He is also able to keep plenty of nutrisoy on hand. All of his basic bills are paid each month. A runner that maintains this lifestyle is still required to pay his bar tab. His vehicles are maintained, aside from severe damages incurred during a run.
