The 'Burgh Burg' '96 Report

Pittsburgh, Pa. hosted its first channel gathering on August 24th, 1996 in South Park !!
Those in attendance were : Daisers, Skibus, Piano, Secretive, FP-, TinyTim, Mrs. TinyTim, Achernar (during his "Speedos Across America '96 Tour"), Triggr, Pippins, Sexpot, and Sierra. The theme of the gathering was "relaxation and laid-back attitude mixed with laughs and talk" .... and everyone seemed to be content with living up to the theme of the cook-out.

Here are the time approximated highlights of the gathering :

Saturday's Activities

  • 1:00 am : Sexpot and Sierra arrived in Pittsburgh and pitched their tent in FP- and Secretive's backyard ...officially opening the #30plus campground for "business". After a few laughs and smiles and all, the four decided to call it a "morning" and get some rest.

  • 8:30 am : Secretive and FP- tended to last minute food details in Munhall, while Daisers did likewise in Lincoln Place and also slipped in a "secretive" mission as well. Piano had already tended to the bun and munchies details in the Mount Lebanon.

  • 11:30 am : Daisers' was the first stop on FP- and Secretive's trek to South Park. After she got to greet Sexpotand Sierra, she got to officially announce that the cook-out was a true IRC event as it had hit "lag".

  • Noon : Sexpot and Sierra are given a hopscotch style tour of the city while on the way to the park ... mainly due in thanks to Secretive and FP- leading them and hanging up directional signsv for the others along the way.

  • 1:15 pm : FP- heads to the airport to pick up Achernar, after realizing that he forgot the hamburgers and hotdogs at his house... Sierra fires up the charcoal while Sexpot and Secretive prepare the pavilion for the others. TinyTim arrives to drop off the beer and soda supply for the cook-out and visited for a few before heading out to pick up Mrs. TinyTim from work.

  • 3:15 pm : Daisers and Skibus lead Pippins and Triggr to the cook-out site after Pippins pitched tent in the #30plus Campground earlier.

  • 3:30 pm : The Daisers-mobile crosses paths with FP--wagon unknowingly, both enroute from different directions to fetch the forgotten 'burgers and 'dogs. Skibus relieved Sierra at grill duty... and Triggr provided juggling entertainment for the cooks.

  • 3:45 pm : Mr. and Mrs. TinyTim arrive at the gathering a little before Daisers and Secretive re-arrive. After teaching Achernar the fine art of "graffitti", all the folks signed their names on the pavilion site as well ... beside the message: "#30plus was here.... then we /quit" ..

  • 4:00 pm : Piano, who is from Pittsburgh area, showed up finally from work ...after getting lost on the way to South Park. The food hits the table and we laughed and talked while trying to put a dent in the food supply ....

  • 5:30 pm : Skibus holds the #30plus 'Burgh 'Burg' Porta-Potty door closed while Triggr takes a picture of this "feat of strength" and Daisers and Secretive hurriedly lit candles ... _then_ Skibus was hollered permission to release FP- so he could be greeted with a birthday cake and song (thus him finally learning what the "secretive" mission was of earlier).

  • 8:00 pm : Folks head back to the #30plus Campground to change clothes then to carpool with Piano or FP- for the rest of the evenings events. Sexpot, Sierra, Skibus, and Daisers had to call it an evening though.

  • 8:45 pm : First nitetime stop ... Achernar's hotel !!! Where Piano and Pippins gave Achernar a "sammich" hug.

  • 9:00 pm : Church Brew Works and Restuarant was where folks met back up with Mr. and Mrs. TinyTim. Also where Pippins refused to partake on a sampler of the micro-brewery's beer offerings, stating she couldn't bring herself to sit in a church pew, inside of a church that you had to pass under an engraving of Christ with a lamb, surrounded by lit stained glass, and drink a beer -- so she had a ginger ale from the "confessional" instead.

Sunday's Activites

  • 1:00 am : Mr. and Mrs. TinyTim call it a nite as we left the Church Brewery. The remainder of the group drove up to Mount Washington to see the nitetime skyline of Pittsburgh. The clear nite sky allowed them to easily see many of the sites of Pittsburgh (i.e. the building that has red lights on top that blinks out P-I-T-T-S-B-U-R-G-H in Morse code since the late 20's and many of the bridges that lead into the town).

  • 2:00 am : Everyone at this time finally decided to call it a nite after arranging what time to meet later on for breakfast.

  • 8:30 am : Sexpot and Sierra loaded their car and headed back to Virginia with an ample supply of hugs to last them for the trip home. Pippins, Triggr, Secretive and FP- headed to the pre-arranged breakfast date at the Squirrel Hill Eat & Park to meet up with Piano, Achernar, Daisers and Skibus.

  • 10:30 am : Pippins managed to convince 2 of Pitttsburgh finest to pose with her outside of the restuarant just for the fun of it before the Pippins-mobile containing Triggr and Skibus headed off towards the Pennsylvania Turnpike for their trek back home -- after delivering an invite for the October Pumpkin Festival. Achernar headed back to his hotel on the Pittsburgh University campus where he would be attending computer class for the next 3 days.

Thus was the end of the first (what we hope may turn out to be) annual Pittsburgh 'Burgh 'Burg that was hailed by all in attendance to be a great success!
