I needed to do a social studies project and trace it back to my ancestory and i decided to include some pictures of anything I could find about the celtic culture (my ancestores) and I would of liked your web site so much more if you included some picture
. But the wording was good and your whole web-page was intersting. I was at first looking for pictures of different items of clothing. We had to make a drawing of what our ancient ancestors might of looked like and a report. I went to your web-site in the
first place so that I could get so help with what clothing items looked like. But your web-site wasnt much help with exact drawings. It was detailed though and gave me some help on how it was supposed to look through its details. I would recommend if you
ould try to find some pictures though. They would be very useful.

Hi! Nice site. I'm looking for some rather specific information on clothing worn on the Isle of Man and the Isle of Lewis around the 11th Century. As near as I can tell, that would represent a mix of Celtic, Norse and Scotish styles, but what would tha
look like? Olaf was King of Mann and King of the Isles, in an attempt subdue the Irish by controlling the sacred island of Mannanen, but the Manx were more strong willed than I guess he bargined for. I find the period facinating, but overlooked. Any s

You may already have visited this site. It references many of the same authors you already know about. It may still be worth you time. I've read through Marc Carlson's site and used one of his examples to make myself a pair of turn shoes for my costume th

Have you found a way to get a copy of McClintock? I searched several Midwest college libraries without success.
I like your web site. Stay with it.

I've worked as a professional hand-shoemaker and done medieval replicas. You're on the right track. Bravo!. Wooden lasts make the Irish one-seam shoes from Hald work beautifully. Soak the leather and pull it around the form with lasting pliers to cont
ol the stretch of the leather and then pierce and stitch the seam as it falls using a curved awl and waxed flax thread fastened to hog's bristles. The wet leather can be stretched and pounded into shape with your hammer. If you want to do incised decora
ion, wet and stretch the leather as above, but let it dry without sewing. Mark and cut your patterns, re-soak and continue sewing. Trim the seam with a sharp knife (careful!) and pound the edges down with the hammer. Trim the top edge of the shoe to sha
e after the leather has dried.
Best wishes,
Ken Nye

hi,
i liked your page very much. i enjoyed the different aspects of celtic culture that you explore. i esp. like that you temper your quest for historical accuracy with a sense of fun.
i'm a mutt, (simplified) my father being irish and my mother's a cajun. i was predom. raised in louisiana with mother's side, but i've begun to explore my irish roots. your page will prove helpful.
i sense that your page will be tended to and growing. i'll peeking into your garden occasionally.
good luck,

Good stuff, I am an armchair reasearcher in many areas. I am always looking for info on leather working. I have slowly accumulated some info., but it is nice to see that someone else has found
additional info. I do make leather bags and try to put, celtic/ viking/germanic designs on them and on other leather items. I do this for friends adn do some selling of my work. Most people are usually not interested in spending the money for what I do
in the way of leather. I make too few sales to do it as a business so I do it more as a hobby. My last name Hartenstine, rymes w/ frankenstine, owner of Celtic/Viking Design Co.,business name is copyrighted, in Saunderstown, RI. Thanks again

I'm researching an early-style leine, and it seems you've provided me with what I need! I'm making an leine, dyed with commercial yellow dye
but I made it very weak to resemble veggie colors.
I used an interesting piece of material, a 60%
cotton, 40% hemp, fairly heavy. One question- in the early, less-voluminous sleeve style, were the ends of the sleeves drawn up in any way, or were they cut to appropriate length? I've also been trying to find information on the Welsh before the influen
e of Normans, any ideas?
Thanks for all your information!

Interested to see your mention of P.W.Joyce. I've seen his 'smaller' social history - belonging to a friend in Scotland, but who will not lend me the book as it's too valuable (and I live 400 miles away). Do you know of other sources for obtaining the b

I was delighted and impressed by the research and
scholasticism present in all your links.
Sometimes I'm leery of people who lay claim to a special interest in ancient cultures and beliefs; more often than not such interests focus on some singular (and, usually, insignificant) aspect with total disregard to the rest. ("I've got a helmet with ho
ns -- that makes me a real VIKING, man!" Yeah, right...) Good luck with your continued interests in things Celtic.
(I came to your page via Robins page via a link on her post to gaeilge-b. I'm just beginning to learn Irish, and my knowlege is so limited I've yet to get up enough nerve to post to the group.)
