Osetia

Kaukaso iparraldeko nazioa da Osetia bi estaturen artean zatitua. Ipar Osetia errepublika autonomoa da Errusian, eta Hego Osetia eskualde autonomoa zen Georgian (orain estatus eztabaidatua). Guztira 572.000 lagun mintzo dira Osetieraz (hizkuntza indo-europarra, iraniarra). Kaukasoko gatazketan osetiarrak (nagusiki kristauak) Errusiaren aldeko bezala ageri dira, bai Geoergian duten istiluetan zein Ingux eta Txetxenen gerretan.

Ossetia

Ossetia is a nation in the Caucasus divided between two states. North Ossetia is an autonomus republic in Russia, and South Ossetia was an autonomous region in Georgia (now disputed status). They are mainly christians and speak an irainian indo-european language (572,000 speakers). In the conflicts of the Caucasus the Ossetians seem to side mainly with Moscow, both in the squirmishes of South Ossetia as in the Ingush and Chechen wars.

Ipar Osetia

Ipar Osetia (orain, ofizialki, Alania). Errusiako errepublika autonomoa. Azalera: 8.000 km2. Biztanleak: 634.000. Hiriburua: Vladikavkaz (lehen Ordjonikidze, 300.000 biz.). Etniak: osetiarrak (%50.5), errusiarrak (%33.9), inguxak (%8.1, 1992ko gerra baino lehen). Erlijioa: osetiarrak kristau ortodoxoak dira nagusiki. Ipar Osetiako Prigorodni eskualdean jatorriz inguxak bizi ziren 1992 arte, baina egotzi egin ziztuzten gerra labur baten ondoren. Orain nonbait Hego Osetiako errefuxiatu osetiarrak ezarri dituzte Prigorodnin.

North Ossetia

Autonomous republic in Russia, located on the north Caucasus and apparently renamed Alania. 8,000 sq km and 634,000 people. Capital: Vladikavkaz (Ordzhonikidze). Ethnic groups: Ossetians (50.5%), russians (33.9%), and before 1992 Ingush (8.1%). The brief war in the Prigorodny region (see a few placenames in Ingush) of North Ossetia in 1992 was fatal for the Ingush, and 50,000 had to scape to Ingushetia. Now Ossetian refugees from South Ossetia seem to have settled in that area.

Hego Osetia

Hiriburua: Tskhinvali. Eskualde honen autonomia ezabatu zuen Georgiak independentzia lortu eta gero. Borrokak piztu zituen horrek, eta orain eskualdearen kontrola argitu gabe dago oraindik. Borrokak baino lehenago populazioa 99.000 lagunekoa zen. Osetiarrak %66 ziren eta georgiarrak %28. Osetiar askok ihes egin du Ipar Osetiara, eta han beste gatazka batean egotzi dituzten Inguxen eskualdean (Prigorodni) kokatu dira nonbait.

South Ossetia

Capital: Tskhinvali. Autonomy was abolished by Georgia after the independence. The control of the area is unsettled (Ossetian-Georgian fights). Before the fights, the population was 99,000 of which Ossetes were 66% and Georgians 28%. Many South Ossetian refugees have fled war and persecution in Georgia and are now resettling in the Prigorodny region in North Ossetia, an area inhabited by Ingush before another armed conflict in 1992.
