The Birmingham Alabama Temple

of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints

Elder David B. Haight of the Quorum of the Twelve will probably never forget accompanying President Hinckley to Alabama to dedicate the Birmingham temple. The dedication took place on 3 September 2000, the day before was Elder Haight's 94th birthday and the day after was his 70th wedding anniversary. When Elder Haight was born there were only four operating temples in the Church and all of them were in Utah. When Elder Haight and his wife Ruby were married in the Salt Lake Temple, it was one of only seven operating temples in the Church and only three of them were outside Utah and only one was outside the United States. The Birmingham Temple is the Church's 98th temple, at the time of its dedication there were 87 temples outside Utah, and 49 of them were outside the United States. Several of those attending the dedication already had reservations to be sealed once the temple was operating. Imagine how many temples there will be when they have been married for 70 years.

The temple was announced on 11 September 1998.
Ground was broken and construction begun on 9 October 1999.
The cornerstone was laid and the temple dedicated on 3 September 2000.
There are 2 Sealing rooms and 2 Ordinance rooms in the 10,700 square foot temple.
The spire is 75 feet tall.
The Birmingham Temple serves stakes in Alabama and northwest Florida.
