The Detroit Michigan Temple

of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints

The Detroit temple's location has some connections to early Church history. Joseph Smith's uncle Stephen Mack (Lucy Mack Smith's brother) was a prominant citizen of early Detroit who helped survey the first road through what is now the city of Detroit. It is possible that the street in front of the temple is that very road. If so, then the Prophet Joseph, his brother Hyrum and his father all traveled past the temple site when they visited Detroit in 1834. The road in question, Woodward Ave, is now an eight lane, very bussy, street that has given the temple a lot of drive by attention.

The temple was announced on 10 August 1998.
Ground was broken and construction begun on 10 October 1998.
The cornerstone was laid and the temple dedicated on 23-24 October 1999.
There are 2 Sealing rooms and 2 Ordinance rooms in the 10,700 square foot temple.
The spire is about 78 feet tall.
The Detroit Temple serves stakes in most of Michigan's Lower Peninsula.
