The Halifax Nova Scotia Temple

of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints

The open house and dedication of the Halifax Temple led to some unexpected and historic moments. First, after the open house media tour, which was not well attended, the largest newspaper in Halifax published a striking photo of the angel Moroni statue shining in the morning sun. The article that accompanied the photo included the open house dates but not the times, this led to dozens of calls to the Mission office from people interested in attending, and a very large turn out.

Then the dedication, which was scheduled for Saturday the 13th of November, was delayed until Sunday the 14th because President Hinckley's plane was delayed in leaving Salt Lake City. Because the Regina Saskatchewan Temple's dedication was also scheduled for that day, President Packer, President of the Quarum of the Twelve, dedicated the Regina Temple. This marked the first time that the Church dedicated two temples on the same day.

The temple was announced on 7 May 1998.
Ground was broken and construction begun on 12 October 1998.
The cornerstone was laid and the temple dedicated on 14 November 1999.
There are 2 Sealing rooms and 2 Ordinance rooms in the 10,400 square foot temple.
The spire is about 78 feet tall.
The Halifax Temple serves the Dartmouth Nova Scotia and Saint John New Brunswick Stakes, the New Glasgow District and mission branches in Newfoundland.
