The temple was announced in April 1981.
Ground was broken and construction begun on 27 November 1982.
The cornerstone was laid and the temple dedicated on 24-25 August 1985.
There are 3 Sealing rooms and 4 Ordinance rooms in the 13,025 square foot temple.
The tallest (east center) spire is 112 feet tall.
The Johannesburg Temple serves stakes in Africa south of the Sahara.
