The Nuku'alofa Tonga Temple
of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
Tonga has the largest number of Mormons per capita of any nation in the world, 38% of the people in the country are Mormon. Because of government opposition in the past, Church growth has mostly been through local missionaries and LDS Schools. The Nuku'alofa Temple is located on the Grounds of the Liahona College, the Church's largest school in the country. The Tongan Monarchy now fully supports the Church and members of the royal family often attend important Church events. The Apia, Santiago, and Sydney temples all follow the same design as the Nuku'alofa Temple.
The temple was announced in April 1980.
Ground was broken and construction begun on 18 February 1981.
The cornerstone was laid and the temple dedicated on 9-11 August 1983.
There are 3 Sealing rooms and 2 Ordinance rooms in the 13,020 square foot temple.
The spire is 75 feet tall.
The Nuku'alofa Temple serves stakes in Tonga and Fiji.
