Inanna

 

Inanna, Sumerian fertility goddess
 

Inanna, Sumerian Queen of Heaven and Earth, worshipped as early as 7,000 BCE.  She was goddess of Power as well as Fertility.  On returning from the Realm of the Dead she condemned her lover/husband, Dumuzi, to replace her there for his arrogance.  Yet each year, she returns to the Underworld to redeem him, being killed herself, and then returning to life.
