A running back with the University of Southern California, Davis lost the Heisman to Archie Griffin. Since Heisman ballots were due back before the U.S.C. game against Notre Dame in which Davis scored four touchdowns and a two-point conversion in which U.S.C. overcame a 24-0 deficit to win 27-24. Davis was also a baseball player while as U.S.C. He won two N.C.A.A. championships at U.S.C. and was also a center fielder on two U.S.C. teams that won the College World Series. In 1975, Davis was selected in the second round of the N.F.L. draft by the New York Jets and the fifth round of the M.L.B. draft by the Minnesota Twins. Hen opted to play for the Southern California Sun of the World Football League, leading the league with 1,200 yards and 16 touchdowns at the time of its collapse. He spent 1976 with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League, before being drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the expansion draft. He spent a season with the Buccaneers, and split 1977 between the Houston Oilers and Los Angeles Rams. His two seasons in the N.F.L., he totaled just 304 rushing yards. He briefly played for the Los Angeles Express of the U.S.F.L. in 1983.
