Harris is the son of an African-American father and Italian mother, hence his Italian first name. He played college football at Penn State and was selected as the thirteenth pick overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Harris was the N.F.L. Rookie of the Year in 1972, rushing for 1,055 yards and 10 touchdowns. An All-Pro running back in 1977, Harris playing in nine consecutive Pro Bowls (1972-'80). Harris was a member of four Super Bowl championship teams and was the M.V.P. of Super Bowl IX, where he ran for 158 yards. He still holds the career Super Bowl record with 354 rushing yards. Harris remained with the Steelers through the 1983 season, and spent his final season, 1984, with the Seattle Seahawks. His 12,120 career yards were second to only Jim Brown at the time of Harris' retirement. Franco Harris was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1990.
